Recently I became involve with a project where remote control of power is
desired. Basically they need to be able to turn off/on AC power independently
to about 25 different devices. The desired operation is to call in and enter a
code then select the power circuit to switch. Standard plug in operation would
be best for the realy/switch.

I have a couple ideas using off the shelf alarm equipement, but was hoping that
a controller for this application might be attainable that more closely suited
the need.

We are not looking for a particularly cheap solution, but rather one that works
well.

APC has some good remote power control units.

Check out http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=70

Thank you Gary. I feel stupid. APC has ben sending me literature for years,
and I have been happily pitching it for years.

I see they have several products which may fall in the category my client needs.
Thank you for the assist.

Hi Bob,

This can be done using TCP/IP if they have a spare fixed IP address. I have
a device in my colo host site which allows me to shut down or restart any of
my servers if they get locked up (blasted Gates!) by accessing a certain
address and entering a password.

If you need the make/model, let me know and I'll look it up for you.

Regards,
Robert L Bass

Nope, won't work for this application. They want a netowrk independent method
of resetting equipment. Gary was right on the money with APC. I alreayd found
some stuff of theirs that is ideal for the application.

You should try Linux and Apache. It's far more robust (particularly for
web servers). Mind you, it does require learning an entirely new OS...
Ah... Blasted Gates! :-)

No thanks. I run a SQL and Cold Fusion based web site. I'm way too far
into it to change now. Besides, I *like* windows (when it's not being
cranky).
