My big PC problem - how to....

The big problem I face when buying a new PC is how to transfer my
Netscape emails from one PC to another. I have a lot and they do not
fit in a disc and I need them.

I have tried transferring (via a Hub) based on what people have told
me but the emails do not merge with the netscape emails on my new PC.
What I get is a text file that is email after email continuously. It
does not look at all like the Netscape email page. So obviously I am
doing something wrong.

I am told either a CD Burner or home networking hub will help.
Which is easier ? I do not have a burner yet. But if it easier I will
buy one.

Both PC use Netscape 6 with high speed Cable connection.

Can anyone please help me ....

Thanks for your help in advance,
Zareen Hill

My email is zah...@go.com- if you can send me a copy of your
input/suggestions/replies- would very much appreciate it.

The easiest way to do that would be to connect your old hard drive to your
new computer as a Secondary or Slave drive. You should be able to open the
case and find extra connections for the second drive.

Take the drive from the old machine and connect it to the new one (both
machines with no power connected of course). You can just set the drive on
a box or something at the right height so the plugs reach. Then turn the
new machine on and it should recognize the new (old) hard drive
automatically. Then just mark the e-mail files and copy them from one drive
to the other - into the correct Folder. You can do that with any files such
as Word, Excel, etc. (just no program files). (Sorry, I don't use
Netscape, so I can't tell you which files you need, or what folders they are
in.

Under the 'Netscape' directory, you'll find a directory called
'users'. Under this directory, you'll find a directory named
the same as your netscape User Profile. (You can find what this
name is by running the User Profile Manager.) Copy this entire
directory to the new machine, using the same method you used to
copy the text file. (I put mine under my 'documents' directory,
to make backups easy). Then go into the User Profile Manager,
and create a new profile, saving it to the directory you just
copied. When you restart Netscape, select this profile, and
you'll find all your emails. In addition, you've copied all
your bookmarks, and everything else unique to your profile.

Unfortunately, I haven't found an easy way to merge two email
files, so when I change drives or computers, I just do the above
before ever using Netscape for the first time. (You can merge
with a text editor, but most won't edit huge files.)

I've had to do it at least a half dozen times and it works fine.

Hi Zareen,

Try this. Create a new e-Mail address (assuming your ISP allows more than
one). Forward everything to that e-Mail address. Set up your new PC with
the new e-Mail address. The rest should be obvious by now. :)

There's also one other very simple solution which I have used a few times.
Go to Symantec and download the 30-day evaluation of pcAnywhere (if you
don't already have it). Download it to both machines. Set the old machine
up as a "host" and the new as a "remote." Connect the new to the old and do
a file transfer. It's lightning fast using the serial port.

Using this method, all your mail is from your old email address.
Kind of makes it difficult to find specific emails.

You can send the entire folder as an attachment. Better yet, consider the
other suggestion I made about pcAnywhere.
