SEND BULK EMAILS WITH PERSONALIZED SALUTATIONS USING LOTUS NOTES |
DominoNews
You can now use your existing Lotus Notes mail system to send email blasts
such as newsletters, product alerts, etc. to your customers. IVE
Technologies
sells a Lotus Notes product called Print Merge Express which supports bulk
emailing, as well as, mail merge printing and graphical reporting
functionality. The tool allows you to send email blasts to specified
customer
email contacts in your Lotus Notes Personal Address Book or other Lotus
Notes
database. It will send one email per contact which is addressed in the "To"
field, so if you have 1,000 contacts then 1,000 individual emails will
be sent.
Optionally, you can personalize the salutation of the email such as
"Dear Mr. Smith,". The email blast can be sent immediately or scheduled
daily,
weekly, monthly with optional load balancing functionality. If you are
storing
your customer contacts in another system such as an Excel spreadsheet
you can
import them into the provided sample database which can then be used for the
email blast.

Site lets workers share stories of firing | CNN Tech

Pink slip doesn't leave them red-faced -- Site lets workers share stories
of firing -- Getting fired is rarely a happy event, but that doesn't mean
you can't have a sense of humor about it. That's what Simply Hired, a
5-month-old employment-related Internet startup, counted on when it
started an affiliated Web site Simply Fired -- devoted to the stories of
workers who have received a pink slip for a silly, outrageous or
embarrassing reason. The Mountain View-based company is even offering a
prize to the biggest "loser" -- a Caribbean cruise that will include
passengers famously fired by Donald Trump on his popular television
show, "The Apprentice."

Deep Throat Move Over: Disgruntled IT Employees Expose All | TechsUnite.org

"Fair Globalization" May Be the Answer to Offshoring -- Another day, another
set of corporate slides arrives in the WashTech/CWA Local 37083 office in
Seattle. "We don't go looking for these slides," said Marcus Courtney,
President of WashTech. "But disgruntled employees continue to send evidence
of their companies’ offshoring plans to us through anonymous phone calls,
faxes, emails and even brown paper envelopes."

Study: Technology 'optimists' turn off TV | CNN Tech

Broadband Internet surfers in North America watch two fewer hours of
television per week than do those without Internet access, while those
using a dial-up connection watch 1.5 fewer hours of TV. The data come from a
Forrester Research study released Tuesday that uses what it calls the
longest-running survey of its kind, counting nearly 69,000 people in the
U.S. and Canada as participants.

Comcast and Time Warner Cable take over bankrupt Adelphia Communications
assets | TechsUnite.org

Will Your Cable Service Get Worse? Comcast and Time Warner Cable are about
to take over the assets of bankrupt Adelphia Communications. Once they do
this, they want to "swap" subscribers in hundreds of cities in order to
dominate local media markets and reduce competition. After the acquisition
and swaps, Time Warner will control Los Angeles, Dallas, Cleveland, Ohio,
and western New York. Comcast will control even larger areas in
Philadelphia,
Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando,
and Minneapolis, among others. Click here to speak out about this plan:

An early look at Windows Vista | CNN Tech

Known for years by the code name "Longhorn," the successor to Microsoft's
Windows XP has been dubbed "Longwait" for its numerous delays. As features
have been announced, it's also been accused of copying Apple Computer Inc.'s
Mac OS X. And that was before most people had the chance to see -- let alone
use -- what's now been christened Windows Vista.

Offshore Update: Beyond Indian Borders | TechsUnite.org

2 new companies were added onto the TechsUnite Offshore Tracker this month,
contributing to an additional 12,179 jobs laid off and 22,390 jobs
offshored.
One of the major contributors to this month’s tracker numbers is ABN AMRO,
with an additional 2,300 jobs offshored and a current 3,500 U.S. jobs laid
off. A second contributor is Delta Airlines, with an additional 1,600 U.S.
lay-offs and 300 jobs offshore. Ford Motor Company is cutting 1,700 of its
white-collar jobs in North America, along with the bonuses it provides to
managers and 401K plans of salaried employees.

New for back-to-school: 'clickers'

Students in Ann Auleb's biology of human sexuality class at San Francisco
State University are often shy about joining classroom debates on gay
marriage, abortion, circumcision and other emotion-stirring topics. But
more students came out of their shells this spring when Auleb introduced
"clickers" into her classes. Students used the handheld gadgets, which
look and work a lot like TV remote controls, to respond to classroom polls
and quizzes without ever raising their hands or voices.

Worms could dodge Net traps | CNET

Future worms could evade a network of early-warning sensors hidden across
the Internet unless countermeasures are taken, according to new research.
In a pair of papers presented at the Usenix Security Symposium here
Thursday,
computer scientists said would-be attackers can locate such sensors, which
act as trip wires that detect unusual activity. That would permit nefarious
activities to take place without detection.

Microsoft plans to release six security bulletins on Aug. 9 to fix a range
of potentially serious Windows vulnerabilities. Some of the vulnerabilities
carry a maximum severity rating of "critical," meaning they could put
Windows machines at risk of an Internet worm, even without any user action.
As is customary, the software maker isn't providing any details until the
bulletins are posted.

Mozilla Goes Corporate; Analysts Say It's All Good | eWeek

Mozilla's gone corporate, and analysts of all stripes say that's a good
thing.

Lenovo Partners Left Empty-Handed | eWeek

Sales of IBM PCs under new owner Lenovo have proven so successful that the

Lenovo executive. For Lenovo Group Ltd. channel partners trying to fill

Will Your PC Run Windows Vista? | eWeek

Not all PCs will gain a full view of Windows Vista. Microsoft Corp. has yet
to finalize the minimum requirements for a PC to run its forthcoming
operating
system. But numerous PC industry watchers predict a dichotomy for the OS,
which is due in late 2006. Although it will be able to run on all but
the most
ancient machines, the OS will favor newer and relatively powerful machines
when it comes to showing its true colors, analysts say.
