LEAD STORY
LOTUS NOTES MAIL ARCHIVING TIPS | Lotus devloperWorks
A mail database can grow out of control and become a problem, even
for people who are good about throwing out junk mail. The larger a
mail database, the longer it can take to perform routine tasks.
Bloated databases are a problem for administrators especially, because
they're often dealing with hundreds, even thousands of mail databases
residing on servers with limited space. On a large server, disk space
consumption can grow over a gigabyte a day!

AMBIENT SAMETIME ACTIVE DESKTOP | Lotus developerWorks
Create an ambient Sametime application that indicates when a group or
user has come on-line using a virtual orb on your Active Desktop. This
article shows you how with the Sametime Links Toolkit, which you can
download from developerWorks: Lotus. Ambient devices have enjoyed
growing press coverage in recent months. Most well known are the orbs
and dashboards from the Cambridge, MA-based company Ambient Devices.
Ambient devices are intended to give users information in the periphery.
They sit on your desk--or desktop as you'll see--and provide high level,
low resolution data. You can configure, for example, an ambient orb to
glow different colors when there is a change in a company's stock price.

WEB AUTHENTICATION USING SOUNDEX VALUES MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A BRUTE
FORCE ATTACK | Lotus Support Services
Problem: InfoScreen has published an advisory showing an increased
risk of a brute force attack under particular circumstances. It may
be easier for an attacker to gain authenticated access to Domino data
when both of the following conditions are met (1) Internet
authentication is configured to use "More name variations with lower
security" in the Server document in the Domino Directory, and (2)
User accounts exist with common or guessable passwords. -- Solution:
In the Domino Directory, in the Server document, there is a field
called "Internet authentication"on the Security tab. This field has
two possible values "More name variations with lower security" and
"Fewer name variations with higher security".

POTENTIAL DOS VULNERABILITY SSL WITH IBM LOTUS INSTANT MESSAGING AND WEB
CONFERENCING (SAMETIME) 3.X AND 6.5.1 | Lotus Support Services
Problem: A potential denial-of-service vulnerability can be triggered
by certain malformed Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) records causing IBM®
Global Security Toolkit (GSKIT) component to fail and thereby causing
the application to terminate. Does this potential vulnerability affect
IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime)? --
Solution: This issue only affects IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web
Conferencing (Sametime) servers that have configured SSL connections
with their LDAP server. To resolve the issue, customers should upgrade
their version of GSKit. Please read on for further information about
when and how to upgrade GSKit.

WEBADMIN.NSF VULNERABILITES REPORTED IN ADVISORY | Lotus Support Services
Problem: Is Lotus Domino vulnerable to the issues reported in the
security advisory posted by Dr_insane entitled "IBM Lotus Domino
server 6.5.1 webadmin.nsf vulnerabilities"? -- Solution: All three
issues reported require that the attacker have ADMINISTRATOR access
rights. If you are not already an authenticated server administrator,
you cannot use the Web Administrator.

LOTUS NOTES URI HANDLER ARGUMENT INJECTION VULNERABILITY | Lotus Support
Services
Problem: Jouko Pynnonen, in association with iDEFENSE, reported a
vulnerability in the Lotus Notes 6.x client that may allow an
attacker to execute malicious code on the user's workstation under
certain circumstances. -- Solution: This issue was reported to IBM
Lotus software Quality Engineering and has been resolved in Notes
6.0.4 and 6.5.2. This issue does not occur in Notes R5 or 4.6x releases.

CROSS-SITE SCRIPTING VULNERABILITY ADDRESSED IN 6.0.4 AND 6.5.2 | Lotus
Support Services
Problem: IBM Lotus recognized the potential for a cross-site scripting
vulnerability to exist under certain circumstances. No customers are
known to have been affected by this vulnerability in a production
environment. -- Solution: This issue was reported to IBM Lotus
software Quality Engineering and has been addressed in Domino 6.0.4
and 6.5.2. For earlier releases, this issue can be prevented by
creating a full text index for databases that allow public access.
This issue does not affect Domino 5.x servers.

This is the third time in a month that Microsoft must play catch-up

IE flaw may boost rival browsers | ZDNet
A major security hole discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer last
week has become a golden marketing opportunity for alternative browsers
such as Mozilla and Opera that are unaffected by the flaw. To avoid
falling prey to a concerted attack aiming to steal log-on information
and passwords, some security experts advised Web surfers to either
turn off some Internet Explorer (IE) features or switch to another
browser as the best immediate fix. Unknown attackers who had taken
control of several Web servers used the flaw last week to install a
remote-access program, dubbed JS.Scob.Trojan, onto the PCs of visitors
to those sites.
