Can anyone tell me how to set "collapse all" as a default setting under
lotusnotes R5 for a database whenever I open it.

If what you want is to auto-collapse a view, what you must do is to
edit the view properties, go to the info tab (the one that has an "i"
icon) and select the option "Collapse all after first use".

Otherwise, if you're refering to sections of a document, there is a
special tab on the properities dialog of the section, that controles
the expand-collapse behavior of it whenever the document is opened,
previwed and edited.
