Hi,

my Notes database icons have a problem with some Windows
backgroundcolors.
If I use a non-standard 256 color even in true-color mode the icons
loose their color and appear in black.

Does anybody know a solution but changing the backgroundcolor?

Konfiguration: WinNT4, SP3, Notes 4.6 (C+S)

I haven't posted this in awhile, but it should explain what you need to
know. The problem goes away in R5.

Lotus Notes & Smartsuite graphic 256 color Palette shift when pasting a
256 color graphic
into Lotus Notes Navigators or Notes Documents.

This is a collection of newsgroup memos and separate papers
written by Vance Jochim, CLP - vjo...@ni.net - consolidated on
9/20/98 from several
sources.

Overview of Problem

Lotus uses a different color palette of colors than Microsoft uses in
Windows 95 or that is used in
internet graphics. This is known as the color shift problem, the 256
color problem or the problem
with the Lotus color palette, the file that describes what color is used
for each pixel in a 256 color
graphic or picture. We have been told that this problem will be fixed
in version 5.0 of Notes, but it affects
all versions of Notes such as ver. 3.x and 4.x, and probably other Lotus
Smartsuite products.

These items describe the symptoms, and several solutions.

Howdy,

There is a Lotus Palette file on their FTP site. It is called
Lotus16.pal
or something like that. You should perhaps try, if you are using the
Notes
3 clients, converting the graphic images that you have using this
palette
and then importing them in to Notes navigators.

Notes doesn't like images that much. Apparently it only uses 122
colours
of 256 (236 if you count what windows takes away) to display any graphic
anywhere in a database.

OS/2 Desktop Background Color Changes when Launching Notes R4

When you launch the Notes 4.x OS/2 client, the OS/2 desktop background
changes colors if a bitmap is being used for the background. This
occurs when using some Super VGA (SVGA) displays with 256 colors
selected.

Change the display from 256 colors to 65K colors or 16 colors.
Apparently the palette redraw that occurs under OS/2 when Notes loads
its palette is causing the color shift. The shift will not happen at 16
colors and is very unlikely to occur at 65K colors.

Lotus Quality Engineering is aware of this issue.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Bitmap Display Difference between Notes 4.5x and Notes 4.1x When Running
in 256-color Mode

Bitmaps imported into Notes 4.5x tend to appear differently than when
the same bitmaps are imported in Notes 4.1x. This occurs under Windows
NT, 95 or 3.x when the computer's display is set to "256 Colors."

This issue is caused by the dithering feature, which was added in Notes
4.5x. The dithering feature is available in Notes R4.5x if your
computer is running in 256-color mode. If you turn off dithering
(select File, Tools, User Preferences, and uncheck "Dither images" under
Advanced Options), bitmaps (in general; see below for more detail) will
display the same as in Notes 4.1x.

Note: The "Dither images" option will not be available for selection
under User Preferences unless the computer is running in 256 Color mode.
Check the Settings tab under Display in the Windows Control Panel to see
what Color Palette is currently selected (for example, "256 Color", or
"True Color (16 bit)", etc.)

The issue here is that some colors used in a bitmap can be different
than the Notes palette at 256 colors. For example, a bitmap might use a
lighter gray than the Notes palette at 256 colors. The bitmap dithering
done in Notes 4.5x tries to adjust for this by setting adjacent pixels
to a lighter color so that the impression that displays is of a lighter
gray. This accounts for the "grainy" look you see. Notes will not
dither at greater than 256 colors because then there are enough colors
to make the closest-color matching to provide acceptable results.

For the most part, dithering helps out in making most bitmaps look
better in Notes 4.5x. Depending on the bitmap, however, this is not
always the case. If customers want their bitmaps to look their best in
Notes 4.5x at 256 colors then they will need to adjust the bitmap's
colors to the Notes palette using an image editing tool, such as Adobe
Photoshop.

Preserving Image Quality of 256-color Image in Navigator or Layout
Region

What steps are necessary to use 256-color images with Navigators or
Layout Regions in Notes R4 without loss of image quality in Windows 95?

In order to use 256-color images with Navigators or Layout Regions
without loss of image fidelity in Windows 95, the following steps must
be taken:

1. Set the Windows 95 system display to High or True Color. To do
this, select the Windows 95 Start menu, then select Settings, Control
Panel. Open the Display icon and select the Settings tab. For Color
Palette, there should be a listing for High Color or True Color; select
it and select OK, then close the Control Panel.

2. Open the desired image file in your preferred graphic editor and
load the Lotus Color Palette, which is a file called LOTUS.ACT. Steps
a. and b. below use PhotoShop as the graphic editor:

a. Go to the Mode menu and select Indexed Color. When the dialog box
displays, select Custom....in the Palette radio button group and click
OK.
b. In the Custom Palette dialog click on the Load... button and load
the Lotus color palette and click OK.

Note: The LOTUS.ACT file can be detached from the Knowledge Base
document titled "Lotus Color Palette for Use with Notes R4 and Windows
95" (#2387), and is also available on Lotus FTP site and the Lotus BBS
in the Notes Product area. For more information about the Lotus BBS,
refer to the document titled "Lotus re:Quest Bulletin Board Service
(BBS)" (#128607 ).

For more information regarding the Lotus FTP site, refer to the document
titled "Transferring Lotus Technical Support Files via the Lotus FTP
Site" (#128698).

3. Save the image in the graphic editor.

4. Set the system display to 256 color.

5. Open the image in the 32-bit version of MS Paint (MSpaint.exe) that
ships with Windows 95 (usually found in the x:\Program
Files\Accessories\ folder).

6. Select Edit, Select All and then select Edit, Copy.

7. Paste the image into the Navigator or Layout region in Notes R4.

A color palette suitable for use with Paint Shop Pro is available in the
Lotus Notes Developers Best Practices Guide (BP_GUIDE.NSF) available on
the Lotus Web Site. The file is called LOTUS.PAL, and is located in the
document titled "Handle color in your application" under the heading
"Making Your Applications Shine". It can also be detached from the
Knowledge Base document mentioned above(#2387).

Lotus Color Palette for Use with Notes R4 and Windows 95

These files enable the use of 256-color images with Navigators or Layout
Regions in Notes R4 without loss of image quality in Windows 95. The
two versions of the palette are suitable for use with many graphics
programs. You can use either the .act (AdobeĀ® color table) palette file,
or the .pal (Microsoft) file. If you're not sure which type of palette
your graphics program uses, try both of them.

When in your preferred graphic editor, load either the LOTUS.ACT or
LOTUS.PAL file and save the 256-color image with the palette current.
Refer to the document titled "Preserving Image Quality of 256-color
Image in Navigator or Layout Region" (#137259) for complete instructions
and an example using PhotoStar as the graphic editor.

Note: If you find that the graphics program you use isn't compatible
with either of these types of palette files, but your graphics program
allows you to create palettes, you can make your own palette from a
Notes screen capture.

To create your own palette:

1. Make sure your screen is displaying 256 colors.
2. In Notes, open an InfoBox that controls colors, and pull down a
256-color menu. For example, in a navigator, create or select a
rectangle, switch to the InfoBox page that controls colors, and pull
down the Fill color menu.
3. Create a screen capture of the palette that's displayed.
4. Paste or import the capture into your graphics program, and use it
to create a new custom palette.

DISPLAY RESOLUTION AND COLOR PALETTE

You can configure the display resolution and color palette choices for
your video display or customize the font size used using the Display
Control Panel.

After making these kinds of changes, you must shut down and restart the
computer unless you are using a Plug and Play display adapter and driver
that support on-the-fly changes.

To configure your display resolution:

1. In Display Control Panel, click the Settings tab.

2. On the Display properties sheet, use the options described in the
following table to change your display settings.

Color Palette

Select from this list the number of colors you want for your display
adapter. The larger the number, the greater the number of colors. To
troubleshoot display issues, try using 16 colors.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Note: Sometimes a larger number of colors requires you to have a
smaller desktop area, and vice versa. This is due to a limitation of
the display adapter.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Check Basic VGA:

Use Fail Safe startup to load the basic VGA drivers. To start Windows
95 in Fail Safe mode, restart the computer and press the [F5] key when
the "Starting Windows 95..." message.

Notice that the display driver used in Fail Safe mode is a 640 x 480, 16
color driver.

Word Photograph images converted to Notes picture object Using Lotus
Color Palette
Possibly affects Powerpoint to Notes and other conversions.

Microsoft and Lotus use different "Color Palettes" which affect the
quality of color photos or graphics copied from a Word document (or we
presume any other Microsoft product) into a Lotus Notes document RTF
field. If copied directly via the clipboard, the colors in a photo
will be "shifted" and look grainy and "weird". Apparently this is
caused because the standard color palette used by Lotus does not contain
all the same colors that Microsoft's palette contains, thus causing some
colors to shift or be assigned colors by Lotus that do not match the
original image.

We were able to copy photographs from a Microsoft Word document into
Lotus Notes without degradation by the following steps:

We used:

- The lotus color palette file Lotus.pal for Paintshop Pro -
obtained from the Notes knowledgebase.
- Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 which is included with Windows 95.
- Paintshop Pro version 4.11
- Microsoft Word 97 - the photos were loaded into a Word document from
a Mac file.

Steps to Convert the Photo/Image:

a. Copy the lotus.pal file into the main directory for Paintshop Pro,
or know the path to find it.

b. Open the Word document and copy the photo object to the clipboard.

c. Paste the Photo into Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0.

d. Copy the Photo from Photo Editor to the clipboard and paste it into
PaintShop Pro.
(Note: Trying to paste the Word Photo directly into PaintShop
Pro or into the Notes RTF field yields a bad image, thus the step using
Photo Editor.)

e. In Paintshop Pro, ONCE the image is pasted, select the Colors - Load
Palette menu. Select the Lotus.pal file, AND
select the "Error Diffusion Dithering" setting (not the
"Nearest Color matching" which yields a bad picture).

f. While still in the load palette screen, select "Open" which runs a
quick conversion and the picture should still appear acceptable. The
picture has now been converted to use the Lotus palette colors.

g. Select the picture and copy via the clipboard and paste it into
your Notes RTF field. It should visually appear as acceptable as the
original Word Photo.

Isn't Microsoft great (or is it Lotus - which Palette came first???).

Methods we tried and that didn't work:

- Copying the Photo directly from Word to Notes gives a bad image.

- Copying from Word to Paintshop Pro gives a bad image.

- Copying to Paintshop Pro and saving as a bmp file, and importing into
the Notes RTF field gives a bad image.

- You cannot directly export the Word Photo object into any file type
like BMP except RTF. We did not try RTF.

- Opening the Windows 95 Display settings and changing to a "Color
Palette" choice of "True Color 32 bit" caused the system to fail upon
reboot. We had to reboot into Safe mode and change the setting back to
"256 color" which is the standard used at the customer site.

- We did NOT try 16 color Win 95 settings or any other settings because
they conflict with the customer standard. It appears this image color
conversion problem affects primarily 256 color palette settings, but we
could not select another non-standard corporate standard.

- We did not test this with other Microsoft products, but assume the
same problem occurs with Powerpoint files (we have encountered color
shift there also when copying or importing a Powerpoint graphic into
Notes RTF.

- Another possible problem is that in Notes, if your Win 95 setting is
set at 256 colors, there is a choice in File - Tools - User Preferences
in the basics section for enabling "Dither Images in Documents" in
"Advanced Options. It only appears if 256 color is enabled in Win 95.
That is a new version 4.5 feature that, if enabled, attempts to fill in
undefined colors with a similar color, such as grey for light blue, etc.
You might first turn dithering OFF and see the effect that it has on the
photo. Notes 4.1x did not have dithering, thus by turning it off, you
are getting version 4.1 colors.

Finding More background Information:

Search the Notes database on Color, shift, palette (one word at a time)
and read the documents. Most important are:
- Bitmap Display Difference between Notes 4.5x and Notes 4.1x When
Running in 256-color mode.
- Lotus Color Palette for Use with Notes R4 and Windows 95
- Preserving Image Quality of 256-color Image in Navigator or Layout
Region

PaintShop Pro has some options to investigate a graphic, such as count
the number of colors used, etc. You might try them to learn more about
this color "phenomenon".

Here are some hints:
First, graphics look good in Notes, if they are created with Lotus
Color Palette.
It can be downloaded for PhotoShop from Lotus Web site, but the best
explanatiion is in the current Advisor Magazine (www.advisor.com) (
April issue "Picture This" )
I recommend to get NavMaker, it does the color translation for you
for all images you need to include in Domino. http://www.sbd.com/

NavMaker handles Web-palette and Lotus Palette.
Pasted images inherit Windows palette, imported images will look better.

Summary of Penny Lane article in Notes Advisor on Navigator Design
Penny Lane wrote an article in the Notes & Domino Advisor magazine on
navigator design, which is affected
by the Palette shift problem.

1. Nav max width s/b 600 pixels. The sum of all the graphics on a
given page s/b less than 640 pixels. (Note - this info not defined
well).

2. Design the Navigator to fit 640 x 480 resolution screens so low res
users, including old laptop users, can see the image all in one screen.
This means, though, that high res users will not see a full screen
image, but partial image. Lane also says that 440 pixels s/b the max
lenght of any given total graphic size (?????) Eliminates scrolling.

3. DPI - DPI s/b 72 which "works best". (not scanned 300, etc) but Lane
does not say how or where to check or select this.

4. Lotus Palette - use the Lotus.pal for Paintshop Pro, etc. Don't use
the available Lotus.act unless you have PhotoShop.

5. Get and use PhotoImpact from Ulead systems at www.ulead.com.
"Easiest to use" of all graphic programs tried (no mention of NavMaker).
Costs $149 if ordered direct.

6. Create graphics in "High Color or Tru Color" display. Lane did not
say where to set this or how to check it (we think it is in the Win 95
display settings).

7. Creating graphics: Use JPG or GIF to get better color depth and
resolution while creating graphic, then step down to BMP when saving the
file finally for use in Notes. (Notes requires BMP files usually,
although 4.6 appears to allow importing of background graphics such as
GIF and JPG (besides BMP). A bigger file size is better during design,
then convert it to BMP.

8. System Display: Set it to 256 colors in Win 95.
