Does anyone know how to create an alias for internet mail. What I am
looking for is, if I have jsm...@123.com and I want the alias to be
John....@123.com. I have tried creating it and get an undeliverable
message user unknown. Any help would be appreciated.

One way that we accomplish this is to set up an External Postoffice in
GW5. I
then create a user here, called JDOE (for John Doe). His email for your
system
is JD...@yourdomain.com. Under the details for his GWise Object add an
alias of
JD...@hisdomain.edu to your smtp gateway. When mail is sent to
JD...@yourdomain.com from the Internet, or to JDOE from within your system
it is
sent directly to JD...@hisdomain.edu via your smtp gateway.

This is similar to what will happen with a forward rule if you set up
this
person with an actual account, but they do not have to have an account
this way,
just an alias. No storage, just forwarding.

If you have set and alias type for your internet smtp gateway, all you then
need to do is go into netware administrator and set a groupwise alias for
that type. John.smith etc

This is also something built into 5.5 internet addressing. You don't have to
create an alias in 5.5, it will accept mail addressed to userid@hostname or
first.last@hostname

A late reply I know but nevermind... have you managed to sort it? What
version of GroupWise are you using?

With GroupWise 5.x for example, you need to view the details of the GWIA in
NWADMIN, and make the Gateway alias type 'GWIA' or similar... then, edit the
details of the user(s) in question and add the alias there.. note you don't
need the domain as part of the alias, just john.smith (ie you don't need to
put john....@123.com)..
