Kitware is pleased to announce the release of VolView 2.0 beta - an
interactive volume visualization and analysis system.

http://www.kitware.com/products/volview.html

Through an initiative with the National Library of Medicine, VolView
2.0 is now available in Free Mode, with all the data input, volume
visualization, and image processing functionality of the Professional
Mode. This makes VolView an ideal tool for anyone working with
volumetric data or performing three-dimensional image processing
tasks.

Working in Free Mode, VolView has an impressive set of features
including:

- The ability to load a variety of volumetric data types including
DICOM, GE Signa, Biorad PIC, Zeiss LSM, Metamorph stacks, Analyze, a
series of images (bmp, jpg, png, pnm, ppm, pgm, tif), and raw data.

- Support for all data types from unsigned char through double,
support for color input data (RGB and RGBA), and support for multiple
channel input data (up to four).

- Volume rendering with compositing or maximum intensity projection,
in parallel or perspective. Composite rendering includes a full
shading model with ambient, diffuse, and specular illumination.

- A powerful editor for mapping data values to color and opacity. An
opacity modulator is also applied based on the gradient magnitude
allowing for 3D edge detection during rendering.

- Coordinate system adjusts to data type. Medical format will use RAS
coordinates while other will use XYZ.

- Three slice viewers for the XY (axial), XZ (frontal), and YZ
(sagittal) images, with an adjustable function for mapping data values
to displayed image values.

- Intuitive interaction including the ability to rotate, pan, zoom
and fly in 3D, and pan, zoom, and adjust window/level in 2D.

- Over 30 image processing filters available with VolView, most of
which are powered by the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit
(ITK - www.itk.org) and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK - www.vtk.org).
By using a publicly available C API, developers can extend the image
processing functionality with their own algorithms.

You can download this release from the VolView web site at:
http://www.kitware.com/products/volview.html. This will not interfere
with any prior installations of VolView you may have. VolView 2.0 is
currently available on Windows platforms. Linux and Mac OSX releases
are expected in early 2004.

VolView 2.0 provides the opportunity for a free 30-day trial of the
Professional Mode, which adds advanced functionality such as
animation, interactive data annotation, and collaboration between two
VolView sessions. Free technical support is provided during the trial
period - please send email to sup...@kitware.com with any questions
or feedback you may have. For all other inquiries, please send email
to kit...@kitware.com, or call 1-518-371-3971 during normal business
hours (M-F 9am-5pm EST).
