Is Monte Carlo considered a "stochastic" technique?

Does this mean Pixar can sue people out of existance and kill their dogs
over it? (Forgive the sillyness, it's a geniune question :-)

Cheers

Quiting Rob Cook's 86 paper on Stochastic sampling: "Stochastic sampling is
a Monte Carlo technique in which the image is sampled at appropriate
nonuniformly spaced locations rather than regularly spaced locations."

So, stochastic sampling uses a Monte Carlo approach, but I wouldn't go as
far to say that there is a strict equivalence. They didn't patent Monte
Carlo integration in general. If in doubt, though, Google returned this
after a short search:
http://www.patenting-art.com/database/cmppixar.htm
As you can see Pixar patented many a thing we now take for granted in
computer graphics.

The patent in question is "Pseudo-random point sampling techniques in
computer graphics". I don't know much about patent laws though, so I can't
say in which cases Pixar can or can't sue.

I hope that partially answered your questions.

Regards,

Tonci
