Does anyone know of any free mpeg-1 encoders out there? I've just begun to
research this and don't know too much about it. I eventually want to
create 640*480 (or 720*486) mpegs which I can output to video or create a
video CD out of. I've found a couple of free ones out there, but so far
they've all been limited to a fairly low resolution.

Thanks,

Daniel Dawson

I believe the resolutions you're talking about are actually
MPEG2. And as far as I know, the MPEG2 format does not use 486
lines, just 480. 640x480, or 720x480 are standard MPEG2 formats.

I don't know where you can get a free encoder, but Darim used to
have a working demo of their DVMPEG MPEG2 encoder somewhere
around: www.darvision.com

Other good software encoders can be found at:
www.ligos.com
www.digigami.com

There are also a number of tips on using DVD interface cards to
playback MPEG2 animation on my web page at:

Hi
Actually there's no limit on Mpeg1. it can do about 4096*4096. Although the
transfer rate of 1.5 Mbit per second pretty much prohibits those resolutions
but the system has no constraints.

Mpeg 2 can also take any resolution although the 720*480 you are talking about
refers to DVD which is only ONE application of Mpeg2 compression.

There are several FAQs on the net about DVD and Mpeg2.

The DVD formats people often use are the following:

720*486 30fps used in NTSC transmissions
720*576 25 fps used in PAL transmissions

If you are OTH making an animation that will be played on a computer for the
computer screen you can use any resolution.

Video DC format is 352x240 MPEG1. YOu can do mpeg1 encording with Xing 2.2
Mpeg Encoder, LSX Mpeg encoder, Megapeg, and DVMPEG. The latter 3 also do
MPEG2 encoding, but you wont' be able to play back the mpeg2 unless you have
an MPEG2 decoder card or software mpeg2 player (with a lot of cpu
horsepower.)
