Importing Adobe Illustrator (AI) files in MAX

Hello,
I'm having difficulties with importing .ai files in MAX. The big
frustration is that it used to work. But for some reason MAX tells me that
the file format is not valid (improper file format) and that it can't be
imported. This even happens with ai-files which already have been imported
earlier. I tried to install MAX over again but without any luck. Is there
somebody who experienced the same problem and knows the answer?

Make sure all objects in your .ai file are converted to curves. MAX
can't handle .ai files that have text objects in them
