Ok I've searched high and low for a fix to my little problem I just found
out i had. First let me give u my specs.
PIII 866
512mb sdram
windows 2000 prof. SP2 and all critical updates with ie6
30gig and 40 gig hd's
Geforce 2 64mb (dell's model whatever that is)
My problem is simple but i can't figure it out for the life of me. I simply
want to run an openGL slideshow screensaver and i can't, if the screen saver
even starts at all it goes slooooow like only a few frames a second (few as
in 2 or 3). Not just with the slideshow screen saver but also the windows
openGL screen savers (3d pipes, flower box, ect.) Now when i push the
"preview" button it displays them just fine fullspeed no problems.

Things I've tried unsuccesfully:
Changing screen resolution and color depth.
Installed latest nvidia drivers (detonator x i think for win 2k and winMX)
Also installed Dells newest driver for my card.
Downloaded Direct X 8.1
Looked through my Video card settings

Nothing works. Still the same results.
Soon as I noticed this, having usually to ctrl alt delete out of a blank
screen (saver) I noticed my CPU usuage ALWAYS reads 100% in use, but it's
not or I'd feel the drag which I don't. My cpu can be not working at all and
still reads 100%, it's reading 100% just writing this message. When i saw
this instantly i thought virus, downloaded the newest virus definitions from
McAffee, no viruses found.
Dont know if this info will help but i like to get every possible thing that
could be suggested out of the way in my first message. with 512 mb of ram i
set my paging files at initial 536mb and max 1024mb on both harddrives. I've
tried several numbers here does absolutly nothing. I play quake 3, tribes 2,
ghost recon all types of graphics intense games that run smooth as ever (
about 85-95 fps average in quake 3) but I can't run a damn screen saver.
SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!! How can i preview openGL
screensavers fine but they dont run on their own?

Thanks,
xtwizx

Your CPU should NOT be showing 100% all the time under 2000. The likely
reason that you feel the pull in screensavers and not 3D games is that
screensavers generally demand much, much lower process priority.

Have you checked exactly WHAT process(es) are taking up so much CPU time?
That should give you hints. Otherwise, the best I can recommend is to run a
spyware cleaner, like AdAware. If that doesn't help, try stopping and
disabling all non-vital services and background apps one at a time, while
keeping an eye on the task manager to see if your CPU gets any relief.
