imagemagick convert -gamma not working

Briefly,
convert -density 120 -gamma 0.5 -trim -transparent "#FFFFFF"
dvips.ps convert.gif
produces exactly the same image byte-for-byte (diff reports
no differences) regardless of -gamma value, 0.5 or any other
value.

The problem's more fully described at

which points you to sample .ps and converted .gif (and .png) images
(see the last post for those pointers). But nobody suggested
a solution that worked. I'd appreciate any further ideas.
