Need help with alpha channel problem.

I am using photoshop 4 on a Mac powerpc 9600, system 7.61 also used for
AVID editing (AVID Express Elite).

Problem:After creating elements to bring into the Avid with alpha
channels shadow elements are a much lighter color than when viewed in
photoshop.

How can I create an object with a transparent shadow with an alpha
channel?

I could use this help now, so if someone has the answer please email me
