I like to create portraits based on photos. I like to be creative with them,
produce painterly effects, sketchy effects, end up with a representation
that's very different from the original but that stil retains the character
of the person.

What 's the best way of reproducing skin color, flesh tones? Let's say if I
turn the photo into line art, how do I go about filling in the flesh tones
so that the final image doesn't look like a coarse clip art?

I have been using the airbrush a lot but all in one layer. Should I be
creating separate layers?

I need help thinking about this and bringing this kind of project to
fruition. Are there any tutorials out there, specifically targeting
portraits? Does anyone have suggestions that would help me?

Many thanks
Scarlett

The newest Challenge at RetouchPRO might help you out. www.retouchpro.com

It just started today, so keep returning to read what people write about
their colorizing techniques.

Hi there Scarlett!
I think that i may have what you want in the form of three
different tutorials. When you describe the effect you want,
i'm thinking of my "oil painting" tutorial, but i have two
"watercolor from a photo" tutorials too. You might be able
to work with these methods to come up with somehting you
like. Check them out at www.myjanee.com/jnetuts.htm

Obtain Painter to use in conjunction with Photoshop.

Look at the following, in the section "Faces - Digital Painting" for some
examples.
