I'm noy sure if there is an "official" pronounciation, but I and most
other people I have heard say "Jif" like the peanut butter. Although I
have heard it the other way, Jif is far more common.

Adding a voice to Gif as in 'Graphic'
History rules, ie. where an acronym comes from pther words then
pronounce them as that word.

For what its worth, i do recollect that the photoshop movies use a hard
G (i think??)

Help! I need a ruling on how to say .gif

The only times I've ever heard people say a .gif file, is on a tv
computer show called dots corner or something, this guy said gif, as in
Gift... and whenever else I hear it, it is pronounced gif as in gift. So
to come to a damn good conclusion, you say .gif, as in gift.

I beg to differ. Since the inception of the GIF format, every
graphics designer and software engineer of my acquaintance has
pronounced it (and continues to prononunce it) with a soft g-- as in
JIF. It actually makes sense to do so; first, because a soft g sound
is more easily and instantly distinguished from the "t" in TIF than
would be the hard "g;" and second, because the physical mechanics of
speaking the word are more pleasant with the soft "g" than they are
with the more harsh pronounciation. Try it, and see for yourself.
Nevertheless, I doubt that the fate of the world is riding on this
one, and it seems likely that if anyone is truly wedded to the hard
"g" pronounciation, we'll all manage to survive it.

This is the correct way to pronounce it. However it does not fall in line with
wha the acronym actually stands for. True mastery comes in knowing the origin
with the correct pronounciation, yet maintaining a hard-line for saying it with
a hard G as in GIFT.

Though, I wish people would just say PNG and dump GIF completely...

Brian,
I agree _completely_ it is pronounced like gif-t. In addition there
is a jif image type.

I pronounce it with a hard G figuring that it stands for Graphic, not
Jraphic. But on the Adobe multimedia CD's they pronounce with the soft G.

I doubt proper nouns follow any rules in English, and if Frank Gifford
wanted to pronnounce his name like Jiff.. who can say otherwise? Look
at Ralph Fines... it's "Rafe" not the usual "Ralf" or Tony Dorsett...
same goes for GIF, if the creators decided it's JIF, so be it. You'd
name and pronounce anything you create anything you want, wouldn't you?

I guess Compuserve would be the people to ask, I believe they invented the
format (correct me if I'm wrong). I have heard it pronounced with a hard G
as in GIFt.

Clearly, this is a can of würz.

Compuserve didn't invent the format, the acquired the rights to it.

*MY* preference is hard "g" gif-t, however, the earliest reference I
heard were soft "g" jif, as in giraffe. Since it is an acronym for
Graphic Interchange Format, one would reasonably think gif-t would rule,
although others have pointed out some outstanding counter examples. I
have never heard a reason why it would be soft "g" jif, other than the
earliest usage. But then, I personally prefer often to be pronounce
without the "t," contrary to advice of _The American Heritage Dictionary
of the English Language_, which I regard as the most scholarly and
authoritative of American English.

Of course, when the topic comes up you can use it as an excuse to talk
about the history of its usage and the debate that has raged here and
sound very knowledgeable. :)

Actually, so far everyone on this thread has been wrong. The correct
pronunciation involves a hard "x", soft "k" and silent "q". This
dates back to the cave paintings of ancient man.

However, any formal documentation on the GIF format states that Compuserve
pronounces it 'JIF'.

Thank God we won't have this problem with the PNG format.
It pronounced PoNG, right? ;-)

Interesting thoughts. 1. You couldn't say "scubba" because it would need two
b's for that given underwater sound. You would not pronounce ROM as ROME
because without the "e" you wouldn't get that sound from the "o"

GIF with a hard G is just natural. It also provides a distinction from the
format already labelled JIF. Oh, and I've been using computer graphics longer
than the format has been around, so I'll call it what pleases me. :)

I'll often use both pronunciations in one conversation just to keep the other
person alert. But when I write, it's always a hard G. :)

I just ordered GifAnimator from Ulead and the folks done there
