I tried making a mask with a color picture and it worked. I thought that
masks only worked with shades of grey, black, and white. When you make a
mask from a color image, does it only use its brightness value? Or what? I
really need to find a good tutorial on masks, something I have yet to find.

There is another which states that this has already happened."

Masks> New> From Image...>
Then look at the dialog. You have three choices about how the mask will be
constructed from the 24 bit image. The first, Source Luminance means 'brightness.'
The second, Any non-zero value will cause full masking at any pixels that are
RGB:0,0,0 and no masking at other pixels. The last, Source opacity is only
useful for image that don't contain a background layer. (Background layers
are 100% opaque.)

Masks are made from 8bit data. Grey scale images are also composed of 8bit data.
Treating a mask as a grey scale image is a convenient way to picture the effect
that using a mask will have. (Black completely masks. White doesn't mask at all.
Shades of gray partially mask.)

Does that help?
