I want to make album pages for mounting stamps and would like to be able
make a cross-hatched (similar to graph paper) background so the stamps could
be accurately located on the page. What is the best way to fill an area
with cross-hatched lines?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There is no "best way" in Paint Shop Pro.
I use The Gimp:

Flood-fill your background with white, then go to Effects->Texture
Effects->Tiles. Choose the "Square" preset from the drop-down list.
You can set the tile size - i.e. the size of the squares - up to 32
pixels.

Apply the effect and you should be in business. I prefer to set the
border width to 2 for a heavier line, but it's a matter of preference.

This should work for most PSP versions.

Open a new image the size you wish your squares to be but with an odd
number of pixels. i.e. 33x33.

Draw a vertical line down the middle (16,0) to (16,32)
Draw a horizontal line across the middle (0,16) to (32,16)

(Note that your first pixel is zero not 1 and your last pixel is 32
not 33)

You may wish to save but either way it must be open to use it.

Use the flood fill set to "pattern", pick the grid image, click a new
image.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I'm having a problem. I don't
understand how to set the flood fill to pattern. I'm using PSP 7.

Thanks Jackie,
This sounds like a good way to do it. However, when I print the grid it
doesn't have the uniform spacing between the grid lines. With some of the
parameters the grid lines even look like they are doubled.

Try reading this link describing how to do it:

Here's another technique:

OK - not a problem. Try the flood fill method mentioned:

consider the size of grid you want. Let's assume the album pages are
8" x 10" of printed area, with borders bringing them up to the
standard 8.5" x 11" sheet.

Now, to get a good print, 150 dpi is a good starting resolution. So we
need an image 1200 pixels wide by 1500 pixels high. So open that size
and resolution of image (Image 1).

If you want the grid to print in 1/2" increments, each line would have
to be 75 pixels apart. (1/2 x 150) So, open a second image (Image 2)
73 pixels by 73 pixels (why 73? Just wait, it'll become clear).

Flood fill your image with white. Set your background colour to black,
and go to Image->Add Borders. Check the "Symmetric" box and set the
border width to 1. Say OK.

Now you have a 75 x 75 pixel square. Switch back to your large image
(Image 1) by clicking on the title bar (leave the small image open).
Choose your flood-fill tool. Now, click on the right-pointing arrow on
your foreground swatch, and choose Pattern from the flyout menu (the
icon is the third from the left and looks like 9 little squares).
Click on the foreground swatch to open up your pattern choices dialog.
Click on the down-pointing arrow to open your pattern previews, and
scroll up to the very beginning. You will see your new small image
(Image 2) listed there - click on its thumbnail to set it as the
pattern for filling. Click "OK" to close the pattern dialogue.

Now, flood-fill your larger image. You'll have an image that will
print with half-inch guidelines. Make sure when you print it that you
set the borders of the page to .25 inches left and right, and .5
inches top and bottom.

For a variant, check out Sally's diamond grid tutorial -
http://www.dizteq.com/butzigrid.htm.

Jackie, thank you so much for taking the time to spell out the steps in such
detail. It's very much appreciated since I am relatively new and trying to
learn. Tomorrow I'll check out the link you and Sally recommended. This is
a great group with a lot of helpful people who don't poke fun at us newbies.

Thanks Kris. I found your article on the google link and will try it
tomorrow. It's written in enough detail that even I can understand it.
Thanks again.

Are you enlarging the printed size? When you print at anything other
than 100%, single lines can be doubled, in order to increase the size
of the image.

In the same way, shrinking an image to print can cause single lines to
be dropped.

Hello everyone,

I found this thread while looking to make my own cross stitch patterns. I have followed the instructions and am still having issues. I downloaded gimp as suggested by Uni and it DOES seem easier to use than PSP. I have made my grid pattern like Tim said and put it in my gimp patterns folder. All went great - until I added it to the picture I will be using as my cross stitch. My main picture (not the grid) for the cross stich needs to be 5" squared because my adia cloth is 6" squared, so this will give me a one inch indent when I measure the adia cloth to set up the pattern borders to make sure it is centered. Not sure what size square I need to make the grid is the problem I guess. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I am using a 14 point aida cloth that is 6" squared. Not sure if that helps or not.

Well, I think I found what I was looking for. I found a free download of various sizes of aida cloth grids at http://www.ajisaipress.com/blog/how-to-design-your-own-cross-stitch-pattern/. Then I found http://www.damaniel.org/dmc/dmctorgb.html where I input the RGB numbers for each color after making my pallet to get the DMC thread colors. Right now working on deleting the white in the grid. Will post again when I have it done and matched up with the image to let you know how it works out.
