Start-up problems with PSP X5

I am trying to run X5 on a new PC running 64bit Windows 8 but meeting problems.

I installed from a disk and the program ran very well the first time I opened it. Next time I opened it the program began the start-up procedure and got stuck half-way. I tried this several times with the same result. So I uninstalled, reinstalled and managed to run the program successfully once and the same thing happened. I tried that several times too.

So I uninstalled the program and downloaded a trial version of X5 which installed without immediate problems. This ran successfully for several days, opening and closing normally and then it showed the same fault as before, getting stuck half-way through start-up. I tried restarting several times without success exactly as before.

So once again I uninstalled the program and am currently running Version X2 which I had been using on my old computer. This runs without any problems but doesn't do everything X5 can. Out of curiosity I also ran a PSP 9 for a few days which I originally bought for my last computer but one!

I did have a try finding help on the Corel web-site but it seems totally impenetrable. So I wonder if anyone here can help? Henry Rogers

I downloaded the free trial and it seemed to install but all I get is the screen to register (which I already have) and, closing that screen, there's another one asking for my key as if I'd purchased it. I have a Win7 64-bit i7 machine. I've posted on the Corel forum but no replies, only views. My PSP XI won't run on my Win7 and the old won't work on my old WinXP.

I guess I'll struggle along with Gimp.

As a result of advice from elsewhere, after my previous post, I had another go with X5 after carefully deleting all old Corel software and making sure my W8 was fully up-to-date etc. It installed OK and I was able to use it for a couple of days and then, once again, it refused to open. The point at which it gets stuck is when the opening window says that the program is "initializing color swatches", exactly as on every previous occasion.

So I've given up for the time being and reverted to X2. This works absolutely fine on my new PC with W8 but was so tiresomely slow on my previous one that I had actually reverted to PSP 9. Of course X2 doesn't provide for 16 bit colour channels with all the functions though it does for many and it doesn't have RAW conversions. But it's an acceptable work-around for the time being as I've also got Lightroom 4 which handles RAW superbly. People always love to blame Windows for everything but I'm not sure I go along with that in this case. I suspect that in due course PSP updates will take care of the instability which has wasted so much of my time these last few days.

I've had a look at GIMP recently but I don't think it does even as much as PSP 9, though I stand to be corrected by regular GIMP user. Back last summer I had a free copy of Adobe Elements 8 as part of a course I was doing and I grew to detest everything about it! I also have a copy of PSP X3 which I bought for my last PC but which proved to require more processing power than was available. It installs OK under W8 but resolutely refuses to start whatever I do!

I first mentioned PSP 9 in my original post, which originally ran on my last computer but one under XP I think. I had it running under W8 for about a week on my new PC with no difficulties at all and remain very impressed by it.

Are you using Zone Alarm, or another firewall?

PSP 7 suddenly stopped working for me (WinXP Pro SP3, all updates).
Animation Shop worked fine. I reinstalled the program, even tried
trial versions of PSP 8, 9 & 10, but still no go. I knew something
was up when testing I turned off ZA and it worked! I then tweaked my
ZA settings for PSP, and now it's working.

If you're using ZA let me know and I'll share my new settings. Could
be similar settings for other firewalls, too.
