What's a Good Paint & Draw Program for Kids

Our lab is convertig to PCs next year and I'm
trying to find a good substitute for our Mac
Claris Works Paint and Draw programs. What
I want is a very simple drawing program
(object oriented) that also allows the kids to
use a variety of painting tools (i.e., a
bitmapped painting).
For example, the kids create a square "stamp"
with the object-oriented shapes. Then they
select the inside of the stamp as an area to
paint in freehand, using a variety of brushes
and colors.
I've demo'd a number of commercial and
shareware products, but they are either too
complicated or do not allow both painting and
drawing.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Paint Shop Pro fits your bill perfectly ^_^ You don't have to do
all functions, and at least one eight-year-old had *way* too much
fun with my PSP and Graphire this Christmas...

I agree with Beth. I'm a non-artist type, and I really enjoy it's
ease of use. (I never could figure out Corel Draw a few years
ago!!).
My middle schooler is a wiz with it! PSP is the perfect choice.

paintshop pro that is. magic artist is a decent program for kids. it has free
drawing as well as stamps and a few simple filter like effects. you might also
want to check cnet.com, zdnet.com and tucows.com, all those sites have a great
software libraries and you even get lucky and find a freeware program that
meets your needs.

Another suggestion, besides those already offered in this thread, would
be Serif's PhotoPlus 5. It's certainly not on the same level as PSP by
no means, but might fit your needs just fine. And the best part
is...it's FREE! You can download it here and check it out for yourself
(requires registration, but no fee):

My wife is a pre-school teacher and recently was awarded a grant upon
her submission to buy PSP7 to use in her classroom. NEVER under
estimate how much a 4 or 5 yr old can do with a program like PSP7.
These are NOT exceptionally gifted children. These are children from
all segments of the community, including those who never see a pc
except at school.
I occasionally visit the school my wife teaches at because it is also
where our 8 and 9 yr old go to, and I have seen these children in
action. My wife has a web site for her class and has posted some of
the images her students have done. Although the images are no more
than you would expect from a small child, they all mean something to
the child who made them. The images are mostly painting with a brush,
and covering the brushwork with a lot of the PSP tubes. Those kids
use PSP as an artist would use canvas and brush.
Our kids love it too. Although I have only recently made the move
from PSP4 to PSP7, from what I've seen so far there is no reason any
normal child should be able to use the basics.
