I am interested in getting the "Impressionist" filter I've read about here in
the forum. Could someone direct me on this matter, please?
Thank you...

It's available with Microsoft Image Composer which comes with Front Page 98.
If you don't want Front Page you can buy the upgrade for $49 (I think) which
will not let you install FP but will still install Image Composer in its
full version. You can check here http://www.microsoft.com/imagecomposer/
for a downloadable tryout ver. of MIC which comes with the Impressionist
filters (without all the presets of the retail ver.) Both the program and
the filters will 'time-out', but you can try it out to see if you like it.

As of 20 minutes ago, the MIC 1.5 beta can still be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/imagecomposer_en.htm

(3 files of 3GB each) + plus a tiny batch file to glue them together and start
the install process.

Impressionist.8bf and a bunch of support files for it will be present after the
install. I don't know about any time limit associated with the file. I just
copied the impressionist.8bf and support files to PSP 5.0 directory and it
worked fine. It is very nifty!

That tiny batch file 2.7 gigs for a total 11.7 gigs BEFORE installing,
30.841 gigs after.
The sys. req. is a PII 450 with 800mb ram and a 6400x4800 monitor with
256bit color.

IMHO the 3 1/2hr boot time just ain't worth the $800,000+ price tag. I'll
wait for the C64 version.

There is a confusion here. It's not gigabytes, the files are megabytes. 9 meg
isn't alot if you have the HD space.

Well, I think the full (about 10 megs, not 9 gigs - heh) program's got
Xerxes' pen tool in it too, but since it's only a 90-day beta, I'm not
sure he wants to get hooked on it... heheheeeee

Seriously though, I think Jasc should consider a 'look & feel' claim, as
long as the DOJ's already got billy & co in court... the interface sure
does remind me of PSP 4.14.

Thanks again for the input.
I think the Impressionist filter is a different kind of filter-(shows what
Microsoft can do)-instead of wild and crazy 'effects' it has the well-known,
standard effects.

Has anyone had a problem with the Style > Pencil Sketch > Soft Detail
Filter in Impressionist causing lock ups on some images? I've tried
to use it on a few, it begins to apply the filter, then freezes the
program. After a bit, it will pop up a message box saying "server is
Busy, click ok or cancel" but ok is the only option allowed and it
keeps looping back to the msg box if you click it.

Besides it being very slow I've noticed that you need to make sure your
\Temp folder is clean. I just did a 600x300 jpg image and it took about 3
minutes to finish and seemed to get about half way and freeze. I let it just
stand then it finished but sat about a 1 1/2 minutes till it did.

I have to ask a question too....
I've dragged the whole "thanm ding" into my plug-ins folder,
but when I try to use the Impressionist Filter, I can only get
the "charcoal" preset to load. The whole thing worked fine
while it was in MIC, but now only one effect will even show
up as an option.

Any suggestions?

A GB here a GB there and pretty soon we are talking about a lot of Hard drive
space! To correct the egregious errors from my earlier post:
3 files of 4000Kb, 4000Kb, 2862Kb and a 2Kb batch file which concatenates them
into a 10,862 Mb (aka 1.0862 Gb) file and starts the install.

When I moved the files out of the MIC directory I put the impressionist.8bf file
into:
C:\Program Files\paint Shop Pro 5\Plugins
and the folder "Impressionist Accessories" under there as well. It works OK for
me that way.
Don't miss the nifty array of Shapes and Textures under the Button Folder.

I think that should be - 10,864 K , aka 10.864 MB, aka 0.010864 GB

Thanks for the advice! I did exactly as you described
before I wrote my question...It won't work for me :-(
But I'll keep trying though!
