I have emailed Mike asking how he achieves the great watercolor effects on
several of the images on his website but haven't received a response. Can
anyone offer any assistance as to what filters/techniques he using? I have
PSP 7 and 8 Beta.

thanks in advance,
Tom H

Now why would you want what I might have to share? According to many of the
PSP clique my watercolor images don't look good.

So really you have nothing to whine about. You don't need my technique to
do watercolors.

What made you think Mike is going to help you? Haven't seen him doing this
for years. First time he appeared, he was offering some "secret link" to
software on his page (that contained nothing secret, beside HTML errors).
Next, we came to era of Mike's "logos", "fonts" (that somehow appeared to be
stolen), and now it goes to watercolor... wander what's next.

Have you tried using Google search? Quick search in

http://groups.google.com/groups?group=comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro

returned me this mini-tut by Antonio Soberon:

Probably Antonio has made some further improvements since then...

I achieved much the same results in Photoshop, using their built in filter,
with very little tweaking. Actually, mine looked better. Mike's so-called
watercolors are NOT that good anyway.

Mike is not the great artist he claims to be- anyone with a computer can
reproduce his "art" techniques. He has no secrets.

"Artist" ( and I do use that term very loosely) Mike does not create
anything a three year old can't top, and besides, he's a jerk. Plus, his low
end work is way over priced.

I am so happy that Jasc is setting up a forum, now I can enjoy reading posts
from REAL artists without having to wade through and killfile those like
Mike. Doesn't work well anyway when others are willing to play with them by
responding to their drivel.

It's a shame you own both Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, but still, no
one buys your "work". Heck, you even fear posting it.

Having just subscribed to this newsgroup and asked for help on Mike's
watercolor techniques/software, it appears I opened the virtual can o'
worms...hehe.

I still like Mike's work and I would say he a very talented guy. I wish
you'd reconsider sharing your techniques Mike.

Seems to me we might be able to get a lot more accomplished on these
newsgroups if we could all ignore the negativity and do our best to keep our
posts "on subject" instead of adopting the "let's bash someone today"
attitude like most of the other newsgroups.

We all subscribe to this newsgroup because we are interested in learning and
seeing each others projects right? To me, reworking a photo or learning a
new technique is a far better thing than trying to demean someone with
useless comments.

Even though I'm new here I can see there is a lot of talented subscribers in
this group.

I just posted a new way to achieve the effect on the Resources news group.

The Salt and Pepper filter makes the effect more "watery" still.

But ... the magic is your Simplifier filter!!

Hi Tom, all good thoughts you posted however unlikely they are to
happen here. You’re unlikely to get anything out of Mike about his
techniques, or even what software he uses to create something however.
He doesn’t use PSP (he couldn’t, even if he wanted to as he uses a
Mac), mostly Painter and Illustrator. He only posts in this group (and
others) to cause mischief and for his warped sense of enjoyment,
anyway, enough about Mike and his evil sycophant Uni.

In case you haven’t seen the other posts concerning it, JASC is opening
up new forums for it’s users that should prove to be a much more
productive environment for sharing graphics, ideas and techniques. It
should be up and running soon, but just keep an eye open here or on
Jasc’s website for the exact details.

In the meantime, you can still get some good info here occasionally,
it’s just that most of the more knowledgeable PSP users have been
involved in the new PSP8 Beta and/or found greener pastures elsewhere.
That should change shortly though ;^)

Like I probably said before, different noise reduction filters can make this
technique lead to a wider range of different "painterly" effects. For
example, here:

http://photoshop.msk.ru/tulip.jpg

I used a bit of Edge Preserve Smoothing before applying Simplifier.

Another thing to consider could be playing with edges after Simplifier,
using PSP's own edge detecting filters or my "Convolution shaman"
http://photoshop.msk.ru/as/shamanes.html (preferrably on a layer copy so you
have more room to play with transparency and stuff).

I just show what is possible, the rest is left to the people that are
interested in figuring out how to do it. I choose to NOT tell people how it
is done just so they will learn on their own. People usually value what
they figure out on their own much more than what is just told to them.

They have invested their own time and energy in finding the techniques so
they value those techniques much more and learn them at a much deeper level.

I have no desire to despense techniques, it is much more fun for me to watch
people learn on their own.

And just yesterday....

Greg Farr wrote about PSP-8:

"I can't find a attributes setting for lines, so I'm assuming they
should be correct, but If I draw a line of any size, from right to
left, in an upward arc, like a dome, the line with take it on itself
to make a straight line in the second half of the stroke, tried this
dozens of times.

It also seems to be a memory hog, more than my PS7 or Painter 7,
actually had to sit and wait for erase at 53 size to catch up, very
slow. Can't find memory settings, so I guess it doesn't have any.
The brushes seem nice, the steps work better and I can make a chalk
like painter has. I haven't done anything yet but scribble."

They must have made major improvements to the blurring tool, so Fugi can
do more of his photo-blur paintings, easily.

Well, then stop doing it if it bothers you so much.

Mike seems to belong to every graphics group on the web and I have never known him to help anybody, usually just advertises his site.
There are a couple of good tutorials though.  I love turning pictures into paintings.  You can go to Google and look up tutorials & Painting, Tutorials & effects, etc.
Good Luck,
Destinie

Little news for you... you don't know everything.

What Mike isn't telling you for whatever reason is that he uses Painter. It
is an awesome program and well worth the money. I have had it for about a
year now.
I also use Photo Shop and Paint Shop Pro.
You CAN achieve a water color effect in Paint Shop Pro. Do a search of
painting tutorials for PSP. The tutorials themselves did not give the exact
effect I wanted, but once you know the basics you will feel more comfortable
playing around and getting different effects.
I don't know why Mike has to act like this is all some huge secret (maybe
you will buy something from him??) But anyways. I have several programs
from going to school and our college just added PSP to their list of
acceptable art soft ware and it will be added to several of the classes next
semester. PSP can do almost all of what PS does. I have to use PS for the
classes I am already in, but if you get comfortable in Google searching,
look for your tutorials and practice, you can make paintings as good if not
better than what Mike has on his site.

Are you going to end up another "art" student who sits around all day in
the comp-graphics group while other PSPers pat you on the back for your
fine "art"? Maybe Fugi can share one of his smudge painting tuts with
you. It's bound to put you ahead of the class :-)

Never said I did Mike, I know you belong to the Painter group and assumed
that since you are so quick to put down PSP that you may use Painter for
your water color effects.
I have seen the same effects used in PS with filters though.
My main point being that when people ask questions they are usually looking
for an answer. Even if you don't want to tell them how to do something you
can lead them to a source that will help them.
Maybe you were just born "Artist Mike" and never needed any help. If this
is the case than more power to you.
