When I SAVE AS or SAVE COPY AS in PSP 9 and PSP Photo X2 Ultimate, I
no longer see the file extension is the File Name box.

As Tim suggested in another post, it sounds like I have file
extensions turned off. I should know this, but how do I turn file
extensions on so that I see them in the File Name box?

From My previous reply

Now How do you know there psp images? are you going by the icon or by the file extension.
When you view as icons the icon shown is the application associated with opening that image.
You may not have show file extensions turned on as windows by default hides them
If It has the name Book cover.PspImage then it is a pasp image But if the file name is only Book cover then the extension is Hidden. To turn it on (and I recommend you do as it stops you opening what you think may be a save jpeg but turns out to be XX jpeg. exe with the exe hidden) In a Explorer window say the one your looking at those images in. Click the Tools On the menu at the top, Now pick the folder options from the drop down list. Then click the view tab. You might have to scroll down a little as it will be either just out of view or the bottom item.
Look For a check box followed By Hide Extensions For Known File types. Put a check in that Box and Ok your way back. You should see the extn now if not close the window and open it again

Forget my last post In the File name box once you start to enter a name the previous name will disappear That's not a problem as the Extension Is In the save as type box below. That's Not what would happen If Known File extension's where turned of.

Trev,

Clearly I don't fully understand how and when file extensions show in
PSP Ultimate. I've gone back and forth from your posts to PSP Ultimate
and still get confused. My apologies. But I'm very encouraged because
I understand enough of the information you are kindly sharing with me
to realize the answer is along the lines you suggest. Your patience is
deeply appreciated. I know we are taking about the same things but I'm
not up to your speed.

I believe I am looking not at icons but at thumbnails of my images. I
am deciding what format an image is in by the file extension, when it
is visible. Since I do have an image named simply Book Cover, with no
extension showing, I assume file extensions must indeed be hidden.
Continuing . . .

In the Organizer, the file extension shows under the thumbnail of each
image.

In OPEN - FILE, the thumbnail of each image shows but there is no file
extension showing. If I pass the cursor over an image thumbnail, a
message appears telling me it is a PSP Photo X2 image, even if it is
in fact a TIFF image.

Continuing - If I use the SAVE AS or SAVE COPY AS commands on an open
image, the window that opens up shows the name of the image listed in
the FILE NAME box, but it does not include the file extension. I need
it to include the file extension.

Now, this part is so frustrating and hard for me to explain but
apparently simple to others - In the past, I was overwriting images
and not getting a warning when using the SAVE AS or SAVE COPY AS
commands UNLESS I specifically made certain the file extension was
included in the File Name box before I saved the image. (Not just in
the Save As Type drop down in the line below it.) If I recall
correctly, images I saved in PSP 7 were being overwritten by images I
saved in PSP 9. But as long as I only deleted the part of the old file
name preceding the file extension, and then added the new name of the
file to be saved, before the extension, I would never inadvertently
overwrite a previously saved image.

But if the image I am SAVING or SAVING COPY AS does not include the
file extension in the File Name line of the SAVE AS or SAVE COPY AS
window, I fear I will again inadvertently overwrite a previously saved
image.

Anyone who can follow what I'm trying to convey to this point is both
a genius and a saint!

Now, I went to the Windows Explorer window, and looked for the Tools
on the menu at the top of the window, but no Tools option appears. The
choices that appear are Organize, Share With, Slide Show, Burn and New
Folder. So I don't know how to tell Windows to turn on file extensions

This is the bit we can not understand. In my File Open the thumbs have a name and Extention shown But then I do have extentions turned on

Again in my case the extention is shown after the name, but anyhow the extention will be added as per the File save as type. Note also if you type it in you will get bookcover.jpeg.jpeg
as The extention will be added

Well PSP 7 would save images as Image.psp and PSP9 would save it as image.PspImage.
So a psp would not be overwriten witha PspImage
