I'll buy into #1; not interested in 2 (I use other software for 3D); As
for #3, I honestly haven't worked much with .pngs (and probably won't
any time soon, at least not until the browser peddlars get their acts
together). I'll buy into 4 only so far as to request compatibility with
Photoshop's lighting filter (if they were to add any more PS-like
filters, I suppose I could see the polar coordinates and halftoning;
anything else I can pretty much duplicate or do better elsewhere). I
don't need #5, as I already own BladePro - and #6 really isn't up to
JASC.

So, what would I like to see?

1. Macros/actions;
2. Ability to import/export to standard vector formats - .ai and .dxf
would be a great start;
3. Lighting filter compatibility (6 is halfway there with the patterns
and textures, would love to see it fully implemented);
4. RESET BUTTON <waves to Porter>;
6. A "Repeat last action" button (makes working with filters easier);
7. Top level Filter/Effects menu (yes, I know when we do get this there
will arise great moaning from the multitudes when they can't find
things... this, too, shall pass);
8. Better colour management including CMYK export and Pantone colours;
9. Resizing for custom brushes (a la tubes); and
10. The ability to perform basic Windows file management from within the
browser.

Those are my basics - hey! I'm down from my baker's dozen for 5!

As for other things that _could_ be added, the list is endless. There
are those who would kill for the natural media brushes available in
Painter and Deep Paint (I'd settle for compatibility with Nowhouse's
Propeller Plugin for Photoshop - sort of a working girl's Deep Paint);
and still others who would like to see a dicer-type functionality (the
only advantage I could see to that is that it would be nice to be able
to save a PSP image with a layer containing all the hotspots, alt text,
etc. for archiving purposes)...

But, honestly, I see those things as being more like bells and whistles.
I'd like to see the program grow more robust at the things it already
does, rather than spread out into new gadgets and geegaws.

I'd go with everything but 5 and 6 -- BP is another company's
anyway, and the new animation format would be of course
unsupported by anything but PSP, so no use for it. My additions:
1) Fractals!!!!! how hard can it be to implement a few common
mathematical algorithms? I did a basic fractal in *Logo* when I
was 8... And they're extremely useful (said the fresh owner of
KPT5, including FraxFlame and FraxPlorer)
2) reset button (but of course)
3) Lighting effects filter, or at least support for the Photoshop
one
4) An advanced beveling tool -- somewhere between Blade Pro and
KPT Shapeshifter
5) A technique that'd allow for simulating "real painting" --
Painter-style, just a few rudimentary effects
6) Something allowing for realistic liquid simulation (yup, still
haven't gotten over KPT Gel and Goo)
7) the ability to save presets in all PSP filters, including the
Color>Adjust tools

I can go along with 1, but have 3D programs for 2. (Why bloat PSP
when it's not required?)
3? That does seem a little awkward in PSP, although it can be done,
once you know the drill.
4. Filters are pretty much 2ond party. Personally, I haven't missed
the Lighting filter from PS. Buy KPT 3,5,6.
5. Most people that need it, buy Blade Pro.
6. Yes, but this seems outside the scope of JASC.

My own wish list?

1. Painterly effects! Brushes that mimic the actions of impasto, oil,
water color, palette knife with multiple colors in the tool. Pick up
colors from the painting to mimic real tools. Let's get some real
Paint in Paint Shop Pro!

2. Get the Layers groups to be meaningful! Let an adjustment layer
only effect the layers in the group it's placed in. Right now I doubt
many people even know what the layers group does.

3. Snap to grid. (this is really a vector requiement)

4. A lot of work in the Printing Ability. It's ridiculous that you
use PSP to paint and another program to print. I guess this would also
correct the CYMK separation.

5. Basic file manipulation in the browser. A tree display, with click
& drag of files to new locations. Thumbnail generator with useable
output. (I've given up on the viewer programs such as Irfan, Thumbs
+, ACDSee, etc. ever getting it right.)

6. Better vector management. Right now the program really slows down
when you have a lot of objects on screen.

7. Reset buttons... :^)

8. Universal Preview buttons in all tools. (Why can't the various
tools have a uniform layout? I truly hate that 'Guess the way it's
used!' layout in KPT3!)

Well from the original list, without going out and purchasing Blade Pro,
Jasc pretty much mimicked it by providing the sculpture effects in psp6.

Ron you have some great ideas, I especially like the adjustment layers added
to layer groups. As for basic file management from the browser, right
clicking an image gives you pretty decent file management. Move within a
tree structure, rename, delete, etc.

My list
1) Macros (Like PS actions) one of the main things that holds PSP back from
being on a level with PS
2) Presets for drop shadows and cutouts. C'mon Jasc. Instead of all the time
making us new toys, make the old standby's truly functional.
3) Sure would like to be able to save my vectors in at least 1 or 2
universal formats. Like emf or wmf.

Bloatware is the path to the dark side.

>6) Someone PLEASE make a new animation format with 16 bit colour and
>transparency???

That's not JASC's job. If I understand correctly, it should be possible to
extend the PNG format to allow animation, using its built in ability to have
custom data. All someone has to do is create a good animation solution, and
get the big browsers to support it. Then we can finally kill off GIF, with
their evil licensing requirements.

I would like to add a layer property called 'Transparency'. Similar to how
'Hue', 'Saturation', 'Luminance', and 'Color' let us use an adjustment layer
to SET different pixel parameters, I would like a 'Transparency' layer type
that lets you SET the pixel transparency. It is similar to the function of a
Mask, except that Masks MULTIPLY the mask transparency with the pixel
transparency... a new layer property as I describe would allow you to simply
SET the transparency value, based on the layer used to adjust.

Other wish items... hmm... I wish rollup windows could roll up so that their
width doesn't change when they are rolled up. I hate the fact that they get
shorter when rolled up. I would also like to see an adjustable delay when
your mouse goes over a rollup before the rollup drops down... it's very
frustrating to nick a rollup with your cursor and have it drop down,
obscuring the rollup you were actually aiming for.

I'd also like to have the ability to customize the keyboard accelerators. I
really can't stand many of the ones Jasc decided on, especially the ones for
the different tools.

I'd like the 'smart edge' function of the lasso to get a lot smarter... it's
downright useless currently.

On a similar note, I'd like the ability to adjust the 'tolerance' values of
most tools dynamically, and see the new results without having to undo my
last edit, and click again.

Comments/suggestions welcome.

Rectangular and polar arrays

Something like corel's duplicate is also handy for equally spacing
copies.

Along with snap to grid include snap to guidelines.

As long as we are wishing for snap stuff - how about snapping to
features of objects like centerpoint, endpoints, qadrants, etc.

"bloatware" well it's all the USEFUL little things I think that make PSP so
good :) And the more plugins and addons you install, the more Windows wants
to throw a wobbly!! :(
6) Ye I know it's not their job :) But a consortium of graphics companies
can surely do something?? Long since time it was done.

Custom keyboard shortcuts, with ye there!!!!

Smart edge I find it not TOO bad, for some things, but certainly could be
improved

A mask controls the existing amount of transparency. Painting a
value of 127 (50%) into the mask will make a Layer transparency of 50%
wind up as 25% opaque.

Don't use the layer transparency, just the mask and you'll be ok.

Put it up into the command line and you stand much less chance of
activating it.

May I state that's a very strange statement? I use the function quite

While it may be possible, I suspect that's beyond the current hardware
ability of most people. Even the current undo operations can use up
the available (32-128 meg) memory pretty fast.

A calligraphy pen and brush for vector - I think Ron L came up with this

Painterly effects! Brushes that mimic the actions of impasto, oil,

Snap to grid seems to be unanimous. I think repeat last action would be a
great time saver as well as the ability to save presets in all PSP filters.
Lighting affect would be cool to have around. As far as Blade Pro, I'm sorry
but I was not overly empressed with this plugin.

There is one thing I would like to have that I haven't seen listed....

The ability to merge to next layer instead of just merge all and merge
visible.

Yes, I think the functions available in Image Robot could well be
included in PSP - or at least a really attractive bundle offer for
registered PSP owners, but I'd really prefer an integrated version.

Additionally both recordable and editable (text please, or XML?)
actions including mouse/brush painting (start, pressure level/position
value pairs, end) would be very useful.

Yes. It was really nice when you took that perspectively distorted
image of a building (had no shifting lens or better position to take
the picture) and rotated the plane around x-, y-, z-axis until
everything was back straight and even. The interface was a bit
difficult to learn (two numeric keys in each row of the numpad for
forward/backward around each axis) but the results were incredible.

That's one of the two functions fron DeluxePaint that I'm still
missing.

The other is the layered animation drawing (onion skin).

How about a "memory used" info available per step in the undo history
and a simple save option "clear undo on save"?

Michael

BTW: How about an undo option for printing - I need a blank page
again. :-)

I would love mng to gain support, but seeing how slowly browser vendors have
been to correctly implement png it appears to be a ways off... :(

I've been watching Mozilla and hope they will get png right soon... they are
getting close... alpha support is still acting up. When (not if) png does
finally get full support by the popular browsers I can see it replacing gif
& jpeg for most uses.

Yep... new format aren't JASC's job... Also, you are correct about
extending png. It's called MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics). The
groundwork has already been done, but like png it's been slow to be adopted
(even less than png).

http://www.libpng.org/pub/mng/

btw, png website has moved to here:

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/

IE & Mozilla (Netscape 6) will support PNG, but there are apparently still
problems with implementation of alpha channels & gamma.

Being new to PSP, here's a few:

1) How about full channel support, rather than splitting/combining? A la
PS?
2) Fix them bugs that cause it to crash.
3) Radial/Sunburst Gradients where the center of the gradient is the click
point, instead of the clunky horizontal/vertical offsets.

And to Silverblade:

Yep about the DeluxePaint, it's one of the reasons I miss my Amiga 500.
You'd think that software vendors would take great programs like that and
copy all the good features. DP3 came out what... about 10 years ago? And
still paint programs don't have all its features... Although, my memory
fades on all the features it had...

Thought of a few more:

4) Ability to save vectors as paths for use with drawing tools.
5) Add 'Merge Down' for Layers ( yeah, I know I can hide the ones I don't
want to merge then 'merge visible', but this is more work than necessary.
6) Easy Single pixel row/column selections.

No. From tutorials I gather it automagically makes the bump map
you created 3D. So you just draw a rounded rectangle, put darker
text on it, do "Lighting effects" and you have smoothly bevelled
text on a plate that looks better than anything... Lots of other
uses too, and it requires PS to run -- I got the file, but can't
do anything in PSP with it

If you get your hands on it again, read the .pdf tutorials at

really nice.

Man, the things it could do!!! Tile to the Horizon, tile into fills, set

For instance you could make a sphere, set ti to Mirrir Fill and it would
(can't remmeber if it was that siple though) and it would then mirrror the

For us folks with bad memory, who forget to take notes on effects used; how
about some way to save the command history with the file. Or perhaps some
way to print or save separately the command history. Or even a way to copy
and paste the command history into that box with comments about the image (My
mind is blank; can not think of the name of the thing. You know, the box
where you type in your name and information about the image.)

That's my point. PSP is not customizable, so you are forced to use JASC's
favorites instead of your own.

I've tried many times... the line wanders aimlessly even when there is a
very well defined edge to follow (such as the border between dark and light
in the hair of a person's portrait).

Perhaps you misunderstand my wish. Current psp filters all have a 'Proof'
button that allows you to see your results before you finalize your changes.
All I'm asking for is the ability to proof my tolerance changes in the same
manner... area selections are faster than filter operations by far, so the
idea that it's out of today's hardware limitations seems silly.

From what I've read of the above articles it's pretty clear that
there's a lot that users are wanting to get when PSP 7 comes out.
Overal I could see that more plugins wern't exactly a big winner, as
they're seen as 3rd party software that should be bought seperatly it's
not up to JASC to create plugins when they could be working on much
better tools such as those listed below.

1) Macros... Like Adobe Actions...

2) Lighting Effects.. From what I can gather there's a great demand for
something to compete with PS's lighting filter.

3) Ability To Save and/or Import Vector Graphics, And a lot more work
on the vectors drawing tools

4) Vector Snap To Grid And Other Objects Centerpoint, Endpoints,
Qadrants ect.. ect..

5) Reset Button

6) Repeat Last Action Button

7) Better Color Managment

8) A program called Delux Paint caused a lot of discussion, apparantly
although an early prograqm it held some fairly promising features.
Maybe some inspiration could be taken from this

9) Ability to apply multiple masks? And/Or a property added to pixels
called "transparency so each pixel's transperancy can be adjusted.

10) I'd also like to have the ability to customize the keyboard
shortcuts - I think the whole setup needs to be able to be customized a
whole lot more. The abbility to harness macro's and so forth to
shortcut keys if they where implemented would speed up things
dramatically. Also the layout.. Colors.. Menu's perhaps if they could
be customized it'd improve things as well. EG, ICQ uses shortcut keys
such as CTRL-SHIFT-I and so does PSP... ability to customize your
shortcut keys would be a dream come true.

11) I'd like the ability to adjust the 'tolerance' values of most tools
dynamically"

12)Smart Edge Could Be Improved (though due to argument I'll just say
Maybe it should) :P

13)Top level Filter/Effects menu (yes, I know when we do get this there

will arise great moaning from the multitudes when they can't find
things... this, too, shall pass);

14)Resizing for custom brushes

15)Fractals!!!!! how hard can it be to implement a few common

mathematical algorithms? I did a basic fractal in *Logo* when I
was 8... And they're extremely useful (said the fresh owner of
KPT5, including FraxFlame and FraxPlorer)

16)A lot of work in the Printing Ability. It's ridiculous that you use

PSP to paint and another program to print. I guess this would also
correct the CYMK separation.

17)Universal Preview buttons in all tools. (Why can't the various

tools have a uniform layout? I truly hate that 'Guess the way it's
used!' layout in KPT3!)

18)The ability to merge to next layer instead of just merge all and
merge visible, and in general more merging options, perhaps just a
simple dialog box with merge that allows you to select the layers in
which you want to merge... perhaps you have a five layer image... you
want to merge three.. you click merge... select the three you want to
merge and click ok... pretty simple...

19)How about full channel support, rather than splitting/combining? A
la PS?

20)Radial/Sunburst Gradients where the center of the gradient is the

click point, instead of the clunky horizontal/vertical offsets.

21)Ability to save vectors as paths for use with drawing tools

Feel free to bitch about what I've written... I'm sure you will
anyway :)

JASC does watch the newsgroup, several employees post here on a fairly
regular basis. Things that have been mentioned here in the past made it
into PSP6. I'm sure somebody at JASC has a folder full of the ideas put

Jasc frequents the newsgroups and hears our requests. Since the beta
test of Version 4, I and others have been requesting things like reset
buttons, and being able to resize custom brushes. Just because Jasc
hears the requests does not mean that they will implement them. Jasc is
a wonderful company in many ways, and PSP is my favorite graphics app,
but I'm at the point now where I don't even feel like contributing to
the "PSP7 Wish List" thread.. why bother? I know Jasc can't please
everyone.. I accept that.. but it doesn't mean I have to like it, and it
does get frustrating at times.

Actually, there is a lighting filter out there that can be used for lighting
effects - it is called Glare and is apart of flaming pears sextet filters.
I've downloaded the demo and played around with it on some photos, and does
quite a good job. I've never used Adobe's lighting filter so have no idea
how it compares, but it is a viable option.

Nobody is ever going to be totally happy with any automatic process,
that's why there are editing functions on the selections. Smart Edge
gets you in the ballpark, then edit the selections to make them
conform to what you want. No paint program is ever going to do
everything for you, and if it did, people wouldn't use it. :^)

Yes, I did. I thought you wanted those effects to be available for
editing after being applied. Such a build-up of effects in memory
would eat resources quickly. I suspect that a set-do it- erase if not
right philosophy will remain the standard for many years in painting,
though.

Heck, I cannot undo a oil stroke on canvas at all. Real paintings
don't let you remove your errors.

Any layer can become a 'Onion Skin' layer, just by turning the layer
transparency on, and painting on a different layer.

I use two different modes, either painting on the semi-transparent
layer with a solid layer below, or paint solid on a erased layer above
the image. It's easy enough to switch between the two.

I still have that program, and going back to it reminds me of how
crude things were ten years ago.

We do our best to regularly look over what's posted in this newsgroup.

However, as was mentioned in an earlier post, the *best* way to request
specific features or make suggestions about Paint Shop Pro is to email us
directly. For Paint Shop Pro, you can send requests and comments to
pspi...@jasc.com.

If you have comments on any of our other products, check our Web site for
the particular e-mail address. You're guaranteed to reach a real live person
at Jasc and your comments *will* be reviewed when we discuss new versions of
a program.

That said, not every feature request will make it into each new version of a
program. If we don't get your idea in, it's not personal, just the reality
that it takes money and revenue to run a business and we have to stop
development every once and a while and release a new version of the program.
While we would certainly love to be able to honor every feature request, it
would literally take years of development for every new version if we tried
to implement *everything* that was requested in the interim.

The people at JASC read this NG quite often, sometimes answering.
I've seen several items we've pushed for included in the upgrade from
PSP5 to PSP 6.

Everyone seems to have an idea of what they think will improve the
program, and from what I've gathered, there is a group at JASC that
actually try out the ideas to see if they'd improve the program.

Perhaps you should remember that from JASC's point of view, the
program has to appeal to a broad spectrum of users, at an attractive
final price.

Generally, adding features that are too specialized or would seriously
impact the price are not likely to be included. For example, PSP
could include KPT5 and 6 with the program, but will everyone want to
spend the extra if they already have those programs or just don't want
those filters?

I also suspect that the programmers at JASC want to keep the program
relatively easy for the budding graphics artist. I've had long
discussions with the engineers at JASC and they're committed to
creating interfaces which are easy to use.

Well, if the mistake is too bad, I'll just palette knife it off and
begin again, but I sure hate doing that. Incidently, I usually use
pretty thick paint, since I like the built up texture to be part of
the impact.

I'll be satisfied to (old) master Oil Paint 1.0 <BG>.

Those filters can be transfered to your current version of PSP if
they're .8bf.

I've never seen one of those work as advertised. I always wind up
using the current painting ability of PSP to remove red eye.

Since I don't have a digital camera, I'll take your word on this one.
Hopefully it'll be an add-on so it won't effect my program.

Ahhhh, yes; but not without waiting 24-48 hours for your mistake to
dry....unless you paint over it right away, and can live with the resulting
muddying of colors. Then again, if you wait for it to dry, and correct it;
you've still got the texture of the underlying brush stroke to contend with.

Thanks for your response!!

I can understand that it's the user community's needs that should help drive
the features in a product.
I have been actively participating in the mozilla project for several months
now so I can relate to what you say.

I know eventually most all of the wanted features will make it in.

MS needs another spanking as far as I'm concerned. Apparently this last one
wasn't enough.
They seem to think that they are above and beyond the law.
On top of trying to monopolize the software/hardware market,
they also consider themselves beyond respecting the rights of others. While
on each piece of software, they have a lenthy, detailed, legalesed
liscencing and copyright statement, that they expect everyone to adhere to;
they cannot find it within themselves to follow the same laws as everyone
else.

I could go on a lengthy diatribe about this, but I'll post a link to follow
instead as it explains things much more clearly than I could.

Here's a way to do that.... duplicate the layer containing the image
information. Run the filter on the upper layer, then fade it until
the effects are where you want them.

Actually, this isn't a copyright issue. It's a trade name issue.
Imagine someone starting a new software company called
"Microsoff". Microsoft would haul them into court before the paint on the
sign was dry. They would win too.
Precedence has been set on this issue repeatedly.

There is one difference between the layers in PSP and the Onion skin
technique used by DPaint: When you were working on image 5 of an
animation, you could see image 4 or image 6 like another transparent
layer above or below your current transparent layer - so you could
adjust movement between key frames very precisely.

In general, PSP layers are a lot more powerful regarding the
possibilities you have - but this feature for drawing animation frames
is simply unavailable (w/o copying the previous image on a layer while
you're working....).

Because people tend to have their personal favourite functions which
they want/need on one-key shortcuts, those which they use less often
so they can be put on two-key shortcuts, and so on.

People who use mouse and keyboard would use other keys than people
using pen/pad and keyboard, left-handers may use a set of keys that
differs from right-hander's keyboard use.

Nobody needs a standard here, but most would like to be able to set
their preferred combinations. And don't forget that other languages
might have other mnemonics.

Isn't oil paint software compared to hardware like chalk and pencils?

As I mentioned, MS has been on the other side so many times, they
likely know what they can do. I've examined both sites and they don't
appear to be similar.

On top of all that, M$ is also into censorship of people, too:

Elves? Gimme a dwarf any day! Wee, mean, tough, stiff necked, mayhem loving,

Requesting the removal of one's copywrite material is not censorship.
If I catch someone using my artwork without permission, I'm perfectly
within my rights to request that they remove it. If they refuse, it's
within my rights to take firmer measures.

The law works the same for groups you like and dislike.

Excellent point.
This also applies to registered trade names.

Normally, I would agree with you, but as I understand it (which I admit I
don't understand it too well) is that this Kerberos thing is open-source.
If MS just adds some proprietary extensions, then passes it off as their own
then how does copyright apply? It's a bit of a confusing issue. I believe
the copyright should apply to the "modifications".

But the issue was/is... Can someone critique your modifications, by
comparing to the original? If they posted the differences to compare them
are they violating your copyright? If they used your extensions, in their
own software product I would say yes, but they are not...

If for example, I had a copy of the Mona Lisa electronically. It would be
in the public domain now, would it not? If not, say it is for this example.
I paint a mustache on Mona then pass it off as my own. Could you post a
replication critiquing what I have done to her? Could I force you to take
it down even if I post it to the web for critical analysis anyways?

I am not sure if this is a good example. It's just readily what came to
mind for an analogy.

Artistic copyright seems to be a more straight-forward thing than software
copyright.

I believe the law requires an 80% new work for you to claim it. A
mustache wouldn't be 80% of the original. However, you could make a
new painting, retaining... oh, say the face, and legally claim that as
your original work.

>Could you post a
>replication critiquing what I have done to her? Could I force you to take

It's important to remember that there are many exclusions to the
copywrite . For example, if I were to post one of your images as a
review, altered for a satire, as a example in a class, then the
copywrite isn't violated.

Ever read Mad Magazine and wondered how they can get away with what
they do?

Still, it pretty much comes down to what a lawyer once told me....
"The law is whatever I can convince the jury it is..."
(no, that wasn't Hillery or Bill!)

I agree. I don't see where the sites are all that similar, and if the conflict
is over similar domain names, the "Digital Divas" should have known enough to
register similar domains. They didn't, so Microsoft registered it. Too bad.
