Having recently received an email promo for Virtual Painter, I took
a look at some of the examples on the web site. I'm a bit confused
as to why I might want to try this program. Some of the examples
look like they are filters from PSP?
Is there actually a difference between the two programs?
Probably, just the name on the box.

Please look a little more carefully.
> Is there actually a difference between the two programs?
Yes, quite a substantial one. First of all Virtual Painter
is a plug-in and PSP is a fully functional image editor.
Second, Virtual Painter does painterly effects. Very few
PSP filters will directly do painterly effects though
combinations of filters can be used for this purpose if
you are familiar with PSP techniques. Here are some Virtual
Painter examples:
http://www.neocognition.com/temp/vp/vp.html
Here are some painting effects done using combinations of
PSP filters:
http://www.state-of-entropy.com/watercolor.html
http://www.state-of-entropy.com/impressionist.html
http://www.state-of-entropy.com/newtutorials/morepaint.htm
Here are examples of painting effects done with brushwork:

If you compare all these different images you will get more
of a sense of where Virtual Painter fits into the picture.
Then you can decide if it is something that is useful to
you or not.
As Mr. T. says "sell, sell, sell!"

p.s. That BIG software company said they're glad you work where you do.
Makes competing less of a hassle :-)
Kris,
Thank you for the follow up. I will check it out. I'm not
able to check it out of for a few days and wanted to see if it
was worth it before trying to find time to do so. Sounds
like it could be quite useful.

Yep, that sure was an arm-twisting sales pitch... " you can decide".

It all depends on what you want to accomplish, how well
you know the program, and how much time you want to spend
on doing things. That's a personal decision and only you
can tell what is best for you.
You can always tell when small software companies are desperate for
business. They hang out in usenet 24/7, like Z' Man.

Not filters *from*, but filters *for*. Really nifty. Jasc is selling
VP on eBay and their descriptions have links to lots of examples. My
pre-installed copy of PSP 7.05 came with 2 'sample' filters from VP --
Collage and Pastel. Don't care much for Pastel, but you can make some
amazing pictures with Collage.
The new improved Virtual Painter http://www.vpainter.com/prog_feature_d.asp
is much better than the previous version, despite the cartoon-ish interface.
I'd recommend it.

I guess they had a budget reduction and couldn't afford marketing.
