Hi OttowaGuy,
Don't let the snippy reply get to you.
Not everyone with experience in this software is such a smart aleck. Some of
us realize that not EVERYONE knows which menu to look in for the right
command, it can be quite confusing at times, sometimes people forget that.

Please DON'T let it make you afraid to ask for help :)

Certainly don't be afraid to ask for help. Also, don't be
afraid to use the Find function (binoculars icon) in the
PSP Help. It can be a quick way to track down information
that you're not sure where to look for in the program.

Ouch!!! That wasn't called for. I seem to remember you asking for help at

That picture frame tool you are now aware of might give the result you
need if the image is close to square shape. But if it's longish in one
direction the frame will be noticeably lopsided. Another problem with
PSP7 frames is they are wide and not width-adjustable, so frames tend
to overwhelm images. (If you have CompuPic Pro, an image manager /
browser / editor, CPic will put an equal frame all around the image of
any width you specify).

You could instead do Image > Canvas Size. Increase the canvas size to
surround the image with a band of colour as set in the background box
(second from top in Color Palette). Just be sure to add the same
number of pixels separately to both height and width. You can even
repeat that with 2 or 3 size increases / colour variations to make a
"faux frame" which will have the exact width you want and be uniform
all around. This can easily look better than the "official" frames.
One nice effect is to have a wide area to simulate a photo matting,
followed by a narrow colour contrast band as a simple frame. Lots of
creative possibilities exist with Canvas Size.

Fancy variation #1 on the above: Select your faux frame area and apply
an effect from Effects to it.

Fancy variation #2. Select the faux frame area and flood fill it with
a pattern.

Wow, cool! I'd take that ISO Quality Certification away from Nancy if I
were them!

Yes, but my description was not limited to square frames. You can use
the ellipse selection tool to select an oval area, copy that as a new
image, enlarge the canvas and diddle with the enlarged image the same
way.

The original selection should be saved to disc in this case so it can
be recalled for expanding. This, plus layer basics, and moving
selection areas you'll have to get familiar with though. I just want
to point out that PSP can do custom "faux frames" of any shape and
width.

For anybody's reference I've posted 3 images at
alt.binaries.comp-graphics to show this:

- Mom-orig+selection.jpg. Orig image and outline of oval to be
copied.

-Mom-NewImage.jpg. The oval copied and pasted as a new image.

- Mom-Final.jpg. After canvas size manipulations. The oval is always
filled-out to a square (in any graphics program). Choose the outer
colour to blend in with your web page.

Ember, this goes to show how far you've progressed in your use of PSP :-) A
few months ago I wouldn't have understood all of the terms and steps you
mention above - I needed a step by step explanation before I could get the
general idea.

There are many ways to do this. For me they are hard to describe in your
language, but mine would be:

-Paste the image as a new layer on a larger canvas. If only part of an image
is needed, make the canvas size bigger just in case.

-Create an opaque ellipse preset vector shape. Being a vector, it will
'land' on a layer above the image. The shape can be pulled to make it
longer, bigger, smaller etctera by activating the tool Object Selector. Left
clicking over the center square and holding the mouse button will enable you
to pull it over the area of the image you need.

-Crop the entire image to just around the oval. Grabbing any side of the
crop selection with your mouse pointer lets you push or pull it. Clicking
anywhere inside will move the whole selection.

-Decide if I want the final product to be transparent around the frame. If I
don't or I want a shadow and I already know the background color the image
is going to be on, I will fill the background with that color.

-I'd then go into Object Selector, Properties to find a suitable fill color
or a combination of a stroke, fill and maybe texture.

-I might also duplicate the vector layer and convert it to a raster. Being a
raster makes it usable for all sorts of effects I might want on the frame if
the initial stroke and fill possibilities weren't to my liking. Among them
might be a bevel, a cut out or a shadow.

-Set a transparancy color for the areas left around the frame if need be
(Colors, Set Transparency).

-Save as a .psp file for future changes.

-Export as jpg if there is no transparency involved.

I knew I would leave at least one thing out. After the crop, erase bits of
the image that might be 'sticking out' if the oval was done on a large image
of which only a part is needed.

Yes there are several possibilities. But the question was posed by a
beginner who thought my original explanation for a "faux frame" only
was good for a rectangular image. I wasn't really trying to go into
step by step, just alert him he wasn't limited to the clunky
(too-wide) PSP picture frames for an oval frame. I thought vector
shapes would turn him off at this point.

Thanks Joske,
