Hallo,

(same message can be found in comp.lang.postscript)

I'm using Adobe PakeMaker 6.52 to write a magazine (for school). The
printing office wants a PostScript-File. I use the Adobe
PostScript-Printer connected to FILE: (PS-Driver v4.3.1) and the
PPD-File "Acrobat Distiller 3010.106" to generate a PostScript-File.
When I look at this file with GSview v2.7 the file seems to be right.
But when I try to convert this PostScript-File to PDF, Acrobat Distiller
v4.0 aborts with the following error-message:

%%[ Error: Times-Roman not found. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%

Stack:
/Font
/Times-Roman
0
[-null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null-
-null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null-

[AND SO ON...]

-null- -null- -null- -null- -null- -null-]
false

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

What does this mean. Is it a problem of Acrobat Distiller or are there
errors in my PostScript-File?

Thanks for any hints,
Christian Andersen

1. Use the ppd file according to imagesetter your printing office uses.
You probably find it on PM's CD, or you can get it from prining office.
Acrobat PPD is not designed to be used for high-res printing.

2. Check if you have selected "Download both Type-1 and TrueType fonts"
in Print dialog.

In Acrobat, is your setting under "preferences" check-marked to embed all
fonts? Maybe that's why?

I had the same problem.

It seems that Distiller has a place (buried several layers deep in the
menus) where you can tell it the folders where it should look for
fonts. Until you list all the folders, it will keep giving you error
messages like the above.

Unfortunately, Windows will install fonts from whatever folder you
tell it to, and will not necessarily move the fonts to the standard
font folder. The solution is to do a complete search of your hard disk
for *.ttf to see where your TrueType fonts are located, note the
locations, and then go into Distiller and tell it where to look. You
can add as many folders as you need in the Distiller window.

Oh, and you need to do the same for Type 1 fonts. They come in two
files -- .afm and .pfb. I think it needs the .pfb files, but I just
specified both the .pfb folder and the .afm folder.

Hallo,

I have more questions:

First my situation: next saturday (05/20/00) I have to send my magazine
(it is our traditional magazine, which the school-leaving pupils publish
every year) to the printing office. I forget to make a test-print. So my
first postscript-file has to be OK.
I'm using PakeMaker 6.52.

1.) What is the difference between using the Acrobat Distiller PPD-file
and the Acrobat Distiller printer-driver (version 4.01) to generate a
PostScript-file (checking the option in PakeMaker) or using the PPD-File
of the imagesetter and the printer-driver of the imagesetter?

2.) Which resolution should I use for my b/w-photos in the
PakeMaker-file? 600dpi?

3.) Which settings should I use in the PakeMaker
PostScript-printing-dialog? (Please a detailed description, because I
don't know anything about PostScript and imagesetters)

Thanks,
Christian Andersen

Danke,
Christian Andersen

Interesting. How am I supposed to make a hi-res pdf, then,
if not with the Distiller PPD?

I have always thought that the Distiller PPD is a good
choice if I don't know the printer (sort of an alternative
to Color General) or the one for making softproofs (pdf) for
my self if I send the originals to the printer.

But I really don't have a clue, I just do my job :-)

Look at the part of Distiller PPD file:

*ResScreenFreq 72dpi: "60.0"
*ResScreenFreq 144dpi: "60.0"
*ResScreenFreq 300dpi: "60.0"
*ResScreenFreq 600dpi: "60.0"
*ResScreenFreq 1200dpi: "60.0"
*ResScreenFreq 2400dpi: "60.0"

That's all. You can also set 100 lpi at 1200 dpi or 175 lpi at 2400 -
nothing more.
But, most imagesetters use resolutions like 1270 or 2540, or even 3500
dpi, and I prefer screening 150 lpi rather then 175 for web offset
printing.
Of course, "intelligent" RIP can override screening set in PS file, but
some cannot, or it's operator would forget to do it...

I use PPD for imagesetter, even if I don't know final machine - I prefer
to put more information in file then less...

But aren't those just information for RIPing, and really should not be
used in any way in creating a device independent PDF? Does any
application do anything with this information when creating PDF's? I
could not imagine it influencing how PageMaker dumps composite images to
the print stream?

I would thind a device specific PPD is of benefit when using some other
printer specific information -- work flow etc.
