Subdo, anyone?

Newtek Europe has a potentially interesting offer, as they're giving
away Subdo for free with a new LW9 license; that's kind of worrying in
a way (whatever happened to the Vue d'Esprit deal?) but on the other
hand, some of the Subdo demos are truly amazing stuff - take a look at
their website if you haven't yet.

So, I proceeded to download the fully-functional demo of the thing,
only to find out that it is practically unusable - every single scene
I tried to feed it with caused the program to crash. I tried the
usual, tripling everything, removing shaders and potentially "strange"
procedurals, gradients... it just doesn't work.

Has anyone had better luck?

DOE! I just posted the same complaint on Newtek's Forum. So from
Sebastienc's reply, it appears to be a known bug that'll be fixed real
soon now. I wish this was clearly covered on their website and
manual(s)! Would've saved a 120 meg download.

The BIGGER question is, why just Newtek-Europe? We poor slubs across
the big pond are feeling MIGHTY left out! I mean, didn't you guys get
the same Vue5 and LWCad bundle deals as we did? If not, are you
trying to even the score? hehehe

SubDo appears to be a great package... a needed package, but I'm
sorry... there's no way I can afford $1,900, even if the cost was
wrapped up in to a client contract, which, in my case, such are few
and far between as its use would be infrequent at best. A shame as
the work I'm doing right now for a client won't cover the cost
investing in SubDo and in time saved trying to force Director/
Shockwave to do in pure Lingo what SubDo can do without learning any
programming language and in a fraction of the time.

Ever try working with 3D in Adobe Director MX??? It is one serious
pain in the keister! If you don't know Lingo, you WILL once you've
spent DAYS pouring thru google searches and Director Bibles for tid
bits of code just to be able to interact (move/rotate with mouse) an
exported LW model (the built-in behaviors/scripts are cumbersome and
lack inertia). And then many more days wrapping your head around
texture animation, since such is not exported, and neither is
transparency texture maps. Oh! And try scaling AND moving an oject
in Layout, exporting (w3d) and watch what Director does!

SubDo appears to make this nearly drag-n-drop simple, very much like
authoring a DVD with it's myriad of contextually sensitive drop-down
controls and parameters for quite complex model interactions.

I REALLY love the real-time cutaway tool!!

And a lot of useless messing around, too.

We actually did get the Vue and LWCad bundle - I can't say how pleased
I am with the latter, while I scarcely ever launch the former - but if
I recall, it begun a few weeks after the USA one, which caused some
serious teeth-grinding around here. So perhaps it's just a matter of
time...

Yeah, it doesn't come cheap; of course the LW deal is pretty nifty -
after all, one can always use one more LW license - but I must say I
was discouraged by the program's approach, which is just SO
different... on the other hand, it does seem to do some incredible
things - have you seen the apartment demo? Changing textures in
realtime, adding furniture... now that would be something, especially
if you're in architecture (as I am).

>Ever try working with 3D in Adobe Director MX???

Yes. It hurt.

I was told at the time that the LW-Shockwave exporter is buggy,
unsympathetic, evil and ugly as sin; so I conveniently dropped it
altogether, which was a lot easier than trying to actually figure
things out.
