first "proper" drawing done with the tablet, now I've finally finished
playing with the thing heh. Done in Painter 7 then taken into Photoshop and
added some post effects (soft focus, contrast and so on) and the text
(Painter sucks when it comes to using layers yack!)

hehe cheers, I choose to take that as a compliment :))

thats why I included the WIP images, so people didn't think it was faked,
besides.. I got one of her arms wrong (far arm is too thin), and mouth, and
those bloody eyes aren't the same, so its not perfect *pouts* :)

Just wish Painter was at the same level as Photoshop when it comes to
Layers. Painter's are horrible to use, unfortunately I can't use PS with the
tablet because it sometimes gets confused with the stylus and draws a line
across the image, which is incredibly annoying.. though painter has great
brushes

Yup, very much a compliment, lovely work!
My wife loved the etheral feel of the final image, she keeps threatening
to
try working using my ickle graphics tablet (A6 graphire) herself but
kicking
me off the computer is no easy task ;-) Anyway, she's got her own art
room so
it's only fair I have my toys <g>

It doesn't matter if it isn't perfect, it is still lovely work.

Thanks man :) I've neglected this side of things for far too long, not only
is it the first proper image I've done with a tablet, but its the first
portrait I've done in a lot of years

lol.. I'm suprised this one works so well, was only Ł50, isn't a Wacom. I
can't blame your wife though for wanting to try it out.. being able to
paint, airbrush, sketch, watercolor all with the click of a button and
WITHOUT the hours of cleaning everything completely between uses (and in the
case of airbrushes, colors erk) really speeds things up and lets you get on
with having fun, wish I'd got one years ago now. What I have found strange
is before I got it I thought I'd struggle with a small tablet, but its
actually quite big for its size, couple of annoying buttons on the stylus
though, might pull it apart and take them out so i don't keep pressing them
by accident

hehehe, just wait until she starts quoting those marriage vows... something
about sharing everything wasn't it? ;))

Still?? I gave up on Painter at v4 because of their ridiculously useless
layers ("floaters" in Painter parlance).

Great painting engine, hideously incredibly useless UI. Gawd how I wanted
to punch them.

My favorite example: Painter is palette heavy. You WANT to make the
palettes go away A LOT. So, what key combo did they use for palette hiding?
CTRL-H, IIRC. Idiots. And here's the kicker: TAB (which is ONE key, and
would conform to Photoshop usage) was unused!!!!! Idiots.

I'm still bitter after all these years. >;^)

yup, if your more used to Photoshop, Painter's layers really mess you
around, unfortunately to save time when you make a mistake they seem
essential, if only they were like Photoshop's, simple and do what their
supposed to.. in the image I should have really done the hair in Photoshop,
I picked up a few tricks on drawing hair in photoshop from that guy who does
those amazing paintings with basic poser models and lots of painting. Same
trick doesn't quite work too well in Painter :(

> Great painting engine, hideously incredibly useless UI. Gawd how I

hehe I know what you mean, I would have liked to put all the palettes on the
second monitor, but my tablet doesn't recognise the second monitor, so I
have to move back to the mouse if I wanted to change color from the second
screen, I dunno if its just this model or if its a common problem. I think I
spent an extra hour last night and this morning trying to put the palettes
in the best places.. ironically similar layout to PS' :)

the brushes though are amazing, watercolor especially is very realistic, can
get slow though with redrawing if you try to do a big long stroke on a large
canvas, like if your doing a background. Photoshop is quicker but even PS7's
painting engine isn't all that hot, which is a shame really, kinda a wasted
oppertunity I guess, oh and that bloody annoying fault with PS and it not
always being sure about the position of the stylus, really spoils things
when you have to go back to the history to remove these buggy strokes cause
you didn't notice them appear until you'd already started drawing again

yeah. still the same awkward key combo. The TAB way would actually work
better for me now as I'm trying to force myself to get used to the keyboard
being to the far right (I'm left handed so everything is wrong to me :)
tablet in the middle, mouse to the left, its a confusing mess of a setup but
I've no room left to have much choice lol!

> I'm still bitter after all these years. >;^)

With good reason :)

Brizon,

Turned out good, though! You're right about Painter's Layers. But it
had layered text before PhotoShop! :)

Painter's scripting functions are really cool. (Version 5.5's at least)
You can redo your drawing from scratch at a higher resolution, for example.

It would sure be nice for someone to write a VB script that would be
able to read a Painter Script, make an Illustrator file out of it, and
then somehow format that info into an LScript. I'm no programmer, but I
think Painter's script text could *easily* be converted to an .AI format
I believe, if formatted correctly. It would be nice to get that script
info and bring it into LightWave via Illustrator files. You'd have
yourself a 3d model (polylines, or whatever) of whatever you'd have in
the vector file (EPS)! Imagine a 3d version of a 2d cartoon-- if that's
what you'd drawn-- Polys or whatever could be tailor made from the
original EPS or AI data. I can see a pixel filter along the lines of
Sas that could read the LScript data based on the vector files and
render line widths (from brushes in Illustrator in particular), and draw
a cartoon right in Lightwave! Or anything else vector related. That
would be great!

Keep up the tutorials, too. Those are awesome!

heh, you'd think by now it would be better, maybe I'm just not as used to
Painter as I am PS, but I find them very basic and difficult to use properly
compared to Photoshops

I've looked at the scripts that come with it, the lizard eye one is pretty
cool, not looked into how to set them up or anything now though, but the
"drawing from scratch at a higher resolution" thing sounds like it could be
incredibly useful, paint an image for computer display, then do one for
print sometime, that would be awesome

hmm, that could come in handy couldn't it. You should let Newtek know, would
be a great little feature, almost like modeling with a drawing tablet,
strokes and pressure and such, would be fun to see what sort of things
people could come up with something like that, neat idea man :)

Thanks :)) really glad people are enjoying them and finding them useful
