Thank you for reading this post! Do you have any opinion (pro or con)
based on experience, hearsay, etc. about the Academy of Art College in
San Francisco? My son wants to attend to get a degree in computer
animation and special effects. Your reply to this post is most
appreciated!

If your son really wants to learn 3D and you live in the SF bay area, do this:
go to a regular school and major in art, film, Photography, or something
graphic related. Then check out www.exhange3d.com. they are a very small
animation school with excellent teachers. u can email me if u like, I attend
there now. barnabas AT best DOT com

I just graduated from AAC last summer, and all I can say about AAC was
"rip-off". I hardly learn anything that I can't learn from any of the
$50 3d books. The worst part is that once you get in, you stay all the
way. Many of the student found out that they can't afford the whole 4
years in their 2nd year or AAC is not as good as they hoped, but they
have to stay and finish it, otherwise the first few years are wasted. No
other school accept the AAC transfer, so if you got in , you stay. So I
will suggest your son to spend the $12000/yr on other schools. Most of
the state universities have pretty good CG program, or I will suggest
taking film ,or photography, or graphic design in any other art school
and take a 3d training at some authorized training center. I would've had
an easier beginning on my career if I did so.

i think the misconception of doing CG animation is at its most extreme...
if ur son wants to just have spaceships flying and ships sinking..perhaps a
CG only couurse would do...but if he really wants to grow and be someone he
has to get his basics down..as how the anatomy works..animal or human
and also how to dramatize and tell a story with a very few seconds that u r
given to worked with.
i am an academy grad (illustration) and i would recommend it only if u live
in the bay area and want ur son close to you..but if he wants to only go in
to learn computers and the CG associated with it you might be better off
looking at somewhere else..
also this being a LIGHTWAVE NG u might wanna know that they dont teach LW at
the academy of art..they only teach SGI platforms (wavefront/alias) as they
get em for virtually free from the manufacturers..
R U confused? there are a couple of animation schools in pasadena..u might
wanna think about those..

Yes they do teach lightwave at that school. I knwo 2 teachers that teach it
there. But still,
I'd get a BFA in fine art, get yer son an intel box with lightwave and photoshop
on it. and if he still needs instruction in LW, find yerself a small 3D only
school that does not charge an arm or a leg to teach it. In the end tho, just
like drawing, it takes practice practice practice. :)

Like I said above, I'd avoid The ACSF school and go get a BFA in fine
art and go to newtek's site and see if there is a small school in your
area. Small school's are the way to go cause there are less students per
teacher.
