Hello,
I am using gnuplot plotting and what is the character string for missing data.
In other words if I have data set with missing dependent values, what can I
use a placeholder?

Anything that cannot be taken for a number, nor contains any whitespace. A
rather common choice is the question mark.
Also see "help set missing" and "help using" for some details.
