Actually that's not at all C-like. C doesn't have any 'to power of'
operator at all --- it provides only the pow(x,y) functions in its math
library instead. gnuplot borrowed 'x**y' to mean pow(x,y) from FORTRAN.
I never heard of the term "exponentiation" thus I couldn't find it in the
on-line help :-)
