On my custom-compiled gnuplot 4.3 (from August 2009) the following
paranormal activity occurs:

gnuplot> aaa = "aaa"
gnuplot> bbb = "bbb"
gnuplot> eee = "eee"
gnuplot> print aaa.bbb
aaabbb
gnuplot> print aaa.eee
^
expecting exponent

In other words, if I try to concatenate a variable with an other one
whose name begins with "e", I get this strange error. As far as I can
tell, this happens with all variable names as long as they begin with
"e".

Hmm. Yes. This is clearly a parsing error. Thanks for the report!

It works fine if the period is separated by whitespace from the
following 'e' character:

gnuplot> print aaa . eee
aaaeee
gnuplot> print aaa. eee
aaaeee
gnuplot> print aaa .eee
^
expecting exponent
