pngcairo / transparency issue on mac

hi all - I am using v 4.4 of gnuplot on a Mac (10.6.6) and would like
to replicate the transparent graphs are seen in the most recent demo
() which use the terminal type "pngcairo"
I am unable to find the dependency libraries via ports as they appear
in the documentation - and I have attempted to install "cairo" related
libraries, but still get the error message:

"gnuplot.gnu", line 2: unknown or ambiguous terminal type;
type just 'set terminal' for a list
Can someone please help? I want to enjoy the transparency stuff!
