Default terminal

At work, under Kubuntu, I installed gnuplot. Normally
I set the terminal to postscript enh eps, but today I
wanted to see a plot on the screen. But whatever the
default is, it did not give me a plot on the screen.
I tried several set term ... but nothing I tried works.

What is the likely terminal type that will give me a
plot on the screen? I suppose I should provide some
information on the terminal I have. All I know is that it
is an Nvidia and a Samsung SyncMaster 192 V, if that helps.

Well, what terminals did you try? And what errormessage was
displayed? What gnuplot version do you have? Stock gp5 build from
debian backports? Homebuilt?

For interactive terminals, qt should definitely work on Kubuntu, wxt
most likely, x11 too. Has nothin to do with your graphics card and
monitor, that was in the 1990ies. Ok, not even then.

"Installed" how, exactly. Odds are you either picked the wrong binary
package from Kubuntu's selection, or, if you built it from source
yourself, you didn't have enough development packages installed to get
any of the graphical terminals built into your own binary.

If there's an interactive graphical terminal built into the binary, you
shouldn't have to try anything. gnuplot starts with the interactive one
pre-activated, if there is any, and it tells you which that is, too:

$ gnuplot

G N U P L O T

I installed it using apt-get, i.e.
sudo apt-get install gnuplot
- about 4 weeks ago, so I ought to have the latest v ersion (?).

OK, I see it's version 4.6. How do I tell apt-get to go and get

x11 and wxt are not among them. As I wrote in another reply,
I seem to have an older version of gnuplot, which sets the
terminal type to "unknown". I'll have to find out how to get
an up to date version.

PS: I just tried installing it again:

gnuplot is already the newest version.

It doesn't go for the latest.

The ubuntu repository should have a package gnuplot5, from debian
backports. Better use that.

Depending on you ubuntu release, there might be different packages
with or without certain terminals, -x11, -qt, -nox. I'd recommend
you use qt.

at debian based systems you must install additional to the gnuplot
package one of the following packages to get a interactive terminal:

gnuplot-x11 is gnuplot 4.6.x with X11 terminal
gnuplot-qt is gnuplot 4.6.x with QT terminal and X11 terminal

gnuplot5-x11 is gnuplot 5.x.x with X11 terminal
gnuplot5-qt is gnuplot 5.x.x with QT terminal and X11 terminal

The packages without -x11 or -qt are without interactive terminals.

wxt is no longer supported on debian based systems.

To change my default to x11 rather than wxt....

That was the clue. I reinstalled gnuplot as gnuplot-x11,
and it works fine now. I still get V. 4.6 but that's OK, it
does what I want.

Older version of Ubuntu does not have newer version of applications.
Some applications can be installed via ppa but gnuplot is not the case.

However, building gnuplot on Ubuntu is not a hard work compared to
that in windows.
Use the synaptic package manager to install dependency libraries and their dev tool (header files and others) and build toolkits.
(dependency libraries: cairo, expat, libffi, fontconfig, freetype, glib, iconv,
intl(gettext), jpeg, pango, pixman, png, lua, qt, gtk, wxwidfgets)

At configure look carefully output messages to see whether missing libraries exist or not. If some dependency libraries and build toolkits exist, go back to the synaptic package manager and install missing those.

After configure does not claim, you go ahead to "make", "make check", "sudo make install".
