Hallo,

I want to use photoshop-Plugins und get always the message:

>>Plug-In "pspi.exe"
(D:\Programme\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\pspi.exe)
attempted to install a procedure with invalid UTF-8 strings.<<

What can I do?

Thank You,

I can't offer much advice other than I have it working in windows, XP
SP2, Gimp 2.6.3 (portable version from portableapps.com).
Because of the error message I would think that it is most likely a
localisation problem, however a couple of things to check.

Have the plugins worked on previous versions of Gimp? The pspi plugin
tends to work only with simple .8bf plugins. Temporarily remove anything
that is not certain of working.

Is the path to the photoshop plugin folder correctly set up. The PS
filters settings dialog is now located at the bottom of the Filters menu.

I keep all my PS plugins in a separate folder away from the convoluted
gimp structure and only put gimp plugins in the '....share\gimp\2.0
\plugin' folder. - separate them - might be worth a try. I have certainly
had 'unable to load' error messages when the PS filter was too
complicated for gimp and on occasions gimp start-up has hung when the
filter was in the default gimp plugin folder..

I work with windows XP SP2 too, Gimp 2.6.3 (german version from
gimp.org).

>Have the plugins worked on previous versions of Gimp?

No.

I did all your tipps and now I get the "pspi.exe Meldung":
"Could not open C:\Users\Günther\.gimp-2.6\pspirc.new for writing"

The folder C:\Users\Günther\.gimp-2.6 exists. There are several files
produced by gimp. There I manually created the file pspirc.new and
gave it all rights.

What am I supposed to do now?

Have a good Sunday evening,

Beats me.

Keep pspi as "D:\Programme\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\pspi.exe" which
looks correct to me.

Try this (free) plugin which I know works with pspi on a Win XP and
claims to be Vista compatible.

http://www.optikvervelabs.com/

I would put it in a separate folder (as a test) and configure the pspi
plugin path accordingly.

Might prove that pspi is working (or not)

Otherwise - ????????????

best of luck.

I did it too.

Now the filter "optikverve labs" is shown in the filter-menue, but it
can't be activatet.

The pspi.exe-Message "Could not open

C:\Users\Günther\.gimp-2.6\pspirc.new for writing"

remains, when starting gimp.

Thank You for Your help.

This is a long shot as I am not familiar with MS Vista.

For the last year-or-so I have been using Linux (as well as windows) and
run a linux Gimp 2.4.7 and use the linux pspi plugin.

To get it to run in Linux, pspi expects a .gimp-2.2 folder - thats where
it stores the pspirc file - which contains the pspi settings.

Try making an extra folder C:\Users\Günther\.gimp-2.2 just for the pspi
settings. Everything else (pspi.exe) goes where you have it.

Is any of the plugins you're trying to load translated? My guess would be
that the plugin name contains national characters, which confuses
GIMP/pspi.

Thank you for your mail. Your idea to find the fault may certainly be
right -- but unfortunately I chose my christian name "Günther" as
account name. And the result is:

"Could not open
C:\Users\Günther\.gimp-2.6\pspirc.new for writing"

With another account name there is no more problem.

Thus I have to try to change my account name in the Vista System.

Thank you for your help (the same to rich too) and a merry Christmas
to you,
Günther (with the horrible "ü" in the name)

Instead of changing the account name, just try this: right-click (My)
Computer, choose Properties, click Advanced system settings, go to Advanced
tab, click Environment Variables, and create a new User variable
GIMP2_DIRECTORY, and put something like c:\gimp-settings as value.
Afterwards, run GIMP, and it should use this directory instead of your user
profile.

Thinking about it thats probably not going to work and as Jernej says its
most likely a regional thing and the umlaut.

Going back to my first post, I use portable-gimp, just had a quick look
and the pspirc file is held in a separate folder "DATA" in the portable
directory structure. It might be worth giving the portable version a try
as it will bypass the \users\...\.gimp directory structure. It will not
affect your existing installation. Put the pspi.exe in the portable-gimp
plug-ins folder just the same as before and point the PS setup dialog to
where the PS plugins reside. It might prove that pspi can work or if it
is a lost cause.
Only problem might be a German keyboard - dont know that one.

Thank you for this advice. It works (modificated) fine. But clicking
"advanced system settings" needs administrator rights and then I
modify the admin-environment. Therefore I modified the environment
variables in the registry.

The other advice from rich works fine too, because the portable
application avoids the critical name "günther" in the path.

Thank you and again I wish you a merry christmas,

Yeah, Microsoft didn't think certain things through with UAC - you actually
need to disable it if you want to do some things as regular user.

You could use the same workaround with normal GIMP, just create a batch
file that sets GIMP2_DIRECTORY before invoking gimp-2.6.exe, though now
that you set the environment variable permanently, this of course isn't
necessary anymore.
