I've only achieved mixed results with the GIMPressionist plugin. :^(
The effect I want to create is a sketched look, like broad, long
diagonal charcoal strokes. GIMPressionist does something similar, but I
can't get the brush lenght right (I want them to extend over the entire
image instead of short strokes) and I can't seem to manipulate the
colours.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get something like this? Thanks
in advance!
I could not find one for gimp, but if going from
http://home.earthlink.net/~daveekelly/mudbug.jpg
to
http://home.earthlink.net/~daveekelly/mudbug-charcoal.jpg
will meet your requirments then investigate
Imagemagick > F/X > Charcoal Drawing.
Dave
Thanks for the effort by the way! I really appreciate it.
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php
(The windows version is at the bottom of the page. Most linux distros
come with it installed.)
Otherwise, you could try a Google search to see if there's a "photoshop
tutorial" for "charcoal effect". We'll gladly help you translate it to
GIMP-esq.

Look at http://www.sepoina.it/grafix/ which has charcoal-like effects.

After some experimenting I realize the best way to get EXACTLY what you are
looking for is to install Photoshop in Linux using WINE (no, not the
beverage). I have Photoshop 5.0, which came with a scanner I bought. I
just installed it using Wine-0.9.12-1 and it runs flawlessly !!!
Lets hear it for WineHQ !!! I downloaded the sources as SuSE, as usual,
doesn't have the most recent version. After compiling it I used
checkinstall to convert to an RPM and updated using
'rpm -Uvh /usr/src/packages/RPMS/i386/wine-0.9.12-1.i386.rpm'
This is where checkinstall puts the package. I find that compiling from
source usually works better for me when it comes to WINE.
Go here to get it:
P.S. There is a link to SuSE rpm's of wine but, as I just stated, I find
that compiling it myself works better. My environment tends to be
different than the SuSE packagers (Marcus Meissner), and thus, compiling it
from source works better.
