If I use Synaptic Package Manager to remove Gimp v2.4.5 and use same
to re-add Gimp, will I get updated to the latest version? The default
repository is being used that came with the install of Ubuntu 8.04
LTS.

On my Vista & XP boxes, installed v2.6.0 but did not find a link to
install help files for same. Installing the help that I retained from
v2.2.4 does not seem to work. Is there an installer for help in
Windows for v2.6.0?

Thanks for any assistance.

The help files have not been updated for 2.6.* yet, they are still being
worked on. The old help files will not work, as you have found out.

Short answer: No.
Every update is notified in Synaptic. If it's not, uninstalling and
installing without adding a different repository will not affect the
version installed.
If you want to upgrade to 2.6 you may want to use the instructions here:
http://phorolinux.com/how-to-install-gimp-26-on-linux.html

Follow the instructions for Ubuntu 8.04, not for Intrepid.
