Hi!

I see that I can embed a comment in a JPG file...
but how can I do this for an XCF file? Say, for an image I create, I want
to put down the idea behind it (or a poem, or some other metadata). How
can I do this?

Thanks!

seems xcf has no comment field...

I think that xcf can happily save parasites, though.
You could add a gimp-comment parasite to your image.

Comments are kept in permanent parasites in XCF files. So, it does
have a comment.

I think the only way to edit the comment is to use the perl-fu
parasite editor.

Is this perl-fu parasite editor available in standard gimp?
I couldn't find any perl-fu menu (just python-fu and script-fu menus).

(it seems so wack that there isn't any Edit->Comment or something like
that. I recognize the generecism available with parasites, but that
there is no (mandated) standard way of editing comments is ridiculous)

Hello Austin,

I found the perl parasite editor (Xtns->parasite editor). There is a
problem with it, however: when I click on 'New', a small window pops up
saying 'NY!'. That's it. I can't add a comment (or anything else) at
all... Any idea what that is?

The parasite editor is not very user-friendly (and definitely not obvious
to find if you do not know the internals of the Gimp) and it is not available
on all platforms (e.g., Windows has no Gimp-Perl).

This problem has been discussed several times in the past and has been
mentioned indirectly in several bug reports, but it did not have its own
bug report... until now:

Raphael,

Thank you very much. I also have EXIF JPG's that my Kodak DC-4800
generates; these have metadata such as aparture setting or (important
for me) a timestamp. Does GIMP offer a way to view and edit these
properties, or would what you propose (I saw EXIF in your
proposal) alleviate this?

** another thing: a long time ago, you edited for me a wishlist item
dealing with canvas rotation (without loss of precision). How close is
this issue to being resolved?

Thanks,
Roey

Currently, the EXIF properties are discarded by the JPEG plug-in when the
image is loaded or saved. This implies that it is not possible to edit
them in the current version of the Gimp, because the core of the program
does not even see them. If you follow the link to the bug report that I
entered yesterday (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61499) you
will see that it contains links to bug #51164 and bug #56443. The latter
is an improvement proposal that I submitted a few months ago about EXIF.

As far as I know, nobody had the time to work on it so far. It has been
assigned to the current CVS development branch (going towards gimp-1.4)
but there is a lot of work going on currently in the development version
because the core of the program is being completely re-organized. Once
the core is stable again, it will be possible to start working on the
improvements again. Your improvement proposal requires some modifications
to the display code and this is one of the areas that is being re-written
so we have to wait until this is stable before anybody can start working
on it. A beta version of gimp-1.3 should be available soon.

Your proposal for a rotated canvas is in bug #55367. You can check its
status on this page: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55367
If you want to be notified of any changes that happen to this bug report,
I suggest that you add your e-mail address to the "Cc:" list for that
bug report. You will then be automatically notified whenever someone
changes something in this report.
