hello all,

i'm running gimp 2.2 and can't get the 'flip' tool to work for the life
of me. probably i'm overlooking something very simple, but just in
case...

i've opened the 'flip' tool all the different ways, ie clicking on its
icon, shift-f, etc, and pressed 'ctrl' to switch horizontal and
vertical. but then, when i click on the image, nothing happens. when i
double-click, nothing happens. when i choose 'select all' and click on
the image, nothing happens.

what am i not doing? does the 'flip' just not show up until you save
the image? am i supposed to click on something other than the image? am
i supposed to do something else *before* i click on the image? am i
supposed to stand on my head when mercury is in pisces and sing the
national anthem?

like i said, i'm probably overlooking something small, and if this is a
dumb question then i'll understand if you want to throw things at me.
but i've been through all the help guides and i'm doing everything they
tell me to, and it still doesn't work.

*dons raincoat*

okay, you may commence throwing things now.

Q
hoping like heck i'm just being dim instead of this being a bug,
because me being dim is easier to fix

You are right clicking on the image, and selecting
IMAGE->TRANSFORM->Flip_Horizontally ?

Alternatively, CTRL-A to select all (this will just work on the
current layer), then the icon for the flip tool on the palette.
There are three options. Transform the selection (the middle one)
transforms the selection region, not its contents (useful for creating
symmetric selections - it won't look like anything happens if you use
that on a rectangular or elliptical selection which is symmetric in the
x/y direction, but if you create a non-symmetric selection using, say,
the Bezier tool and then apply it you will see the outline of the
selection region change), transform the path and (the left one) transform
layer. Choose the left one.

Then click on the image's layer to get a floating layer (the flipped
section) and anchor it (or make it a new layer).

The flip tool works on the active layer or layer mask. Are you sure you
selected the layer you want to flip in the layers dialog?

Another possibility: One can choose if the tool affects the layer, the
selection or a path in its tool dialog.

...here's where i'm running into trouble. how do you click on the
image's layer? if it's the same thing as clicking on the selected image
itself, then i'm doing that and it's not working (it won't let me
create a new layer or anchor the existing one).

sorry if this is ridiculously self-explanatory but i've never really
worked with the layers option before.

With the cursor over the image with a layer selected, CTRL-A
(or right click, SELECT->ALL)
On the tool palette, the "flip" tool, clicking the left option
(to modify the layer).
The cursor back over the image. Left click.
Do you get a flipped layer?
If so, either right click, Layer->Anchor Layer
or
In the layer dialog (where the layer thumbnail appears)
right click on the "floating selection" and choose to anchor it.

If that isn't working ... does right clicking on the image,
Image->Transform->Flip Horizontally, work?

If the flip tool is not working, what is the format of the image?

You may have to click, say, on the title bar or the image first
depending on how you have your window manager configured. I use
ICE and have it configured so that simply moving the cursor to
a window selects it (the title bar is highlighted).
