When I try to open certain TIFF images in GIMP I get the following two
error messages in one dialog each:

«TIFF image Message [path to file]: Bad value 0 for "RowsPerStrip"»
«Opening '[path to file]' failed: TIFF image plug-In could not open the
image»

These TIFF¹ images opens just fine in Photoshop, and if I save them from
Photoshop with byte order set to "IBM", instead of "Macintosh" as the
originals are, I can open them without problems in GIMP afterwards. Does
anyone know if it would be possible to open these TIFF files directly in
GIMP, or do I have to open/convert/save them in Photoshop first?

I run GIMP 2.4.2 on Windows Vista x64.

¹ RGB, 8 bits per channel.

I have no clue as to what your problem is, however... I had a similar
problem with Gimp, trying to open files saved as *.tif and *.xcf. It
turned out there was nothing wrong with Gimp, but the linux OS version
(2.6.23.1 or so) had a known bug that only showed when saving to a network
drive. I bumped back to 2.6.21 or so, and the problem vanished.

My point is your problem may not be Gimp at all, rather a fault somewhere
else. Is your TIFF library up to date? Are there known problems with
Vista 64? What happens with Vista-32 or XP?

I believe it is. I downloaded new version of Gimp today and reinstalled
everything.

Well, yes, several. But that’s a long story … ;) I was hoping as log as
Photoshop is able to open these files (on the same machine) that I would
be able to open them in Gimp as well.

Same problem with Windows XP Pro 32 bit version. I have not tested with
XP x64 Pro, though.
