I`m a new Gimp user (1.0.4 from Debian potato) and want to use some old
Fireworks 2 png-files.
Gimp doesn`t recognize the layers of the files, and Fireworks can`t export
to Gimp`s xcf-format.
The Gimp Faq and Google (Web, Groups) left me clueless, even if I can`t
imagine that this could be a *new* question ?
Any hints ? Thanks in advance !

Macromedia extended PNG to keep layers but it works only with
Fireworks. You can save your Fireworks PNG files as PSD (Photoshop
format) - GIMP can open PSD files with layers (I try it on GIMP 1.2
for Windows).

Thanks for the hint. I just noted that my Fireworks (it`s V1, not V2) can`t
export to PSD !
Now I will save every single layer by hand as PNG (will be about 200
PNGs), and try to reassemble them in Gimp.
Another reason not to use proprietary software anymore...

Hans

You can install 30 day trial Fireworks4 and use batch process to
convert automaticaly all png to psd.
