I know GIMP can handle multiple files because I can simply open them
one by one. But this gets really tedious if I need to work on 15-25
files at a time. Is there any way to load multiple files in GIMP?

... recently there showed up a plugin which handles globbing. Check it
out from the registry.

gimp *.jpeg

One way is to load multiple files when starting up Gimp, e.g.:
% gimp *.jpg
But if you want to load them into an already running Gimp, I don't know.
I've had the same problem myself when making animated GIF's from
multiple source files. The individual frames need to be loaded into
subsequent layers, which can be quite tedious to do manually. Do
anybody know of a hint which can make this process faster?

Have you looked at GAP (Gimp Animation Plugin)? I believe it has some
filters that you need. The one I have in mind is the one that makes a
multilayer file from different single layer files.
Find it at the registry.
