How do I turn off a tool in Gimp? 2.6.6

If I click a tool to move an image, I can't find a way to UNCLICK it to do something else. The tool just won't quit.

If feel rather dumb, but, I can't figure this out.

Select another one tool in the tool window.

The tools are a pest. That GIMP starts with a brush is pure insanity as
that leads to damage to the pics.

The best thing to do is to type

r

which will choose the rectangle selection tool. Also, choose it after
use want to get rid of any of the other tools.

At least on mine, it starts with the brush as the default tool, but
shows, on the tool selection pane, that it has the rectangle tool
selected by default. Ie, the indication and the actuality differ.
This seems to be a bug, and having the brush as the default would seem
to be another bug.
