Hi,

I am looking for a way to soothly fade out a selection. My first try was to
select the area I want to fade out and then say feather selection.

The problem is that if eg the selection to be faded out is a rectangle, I
need to fade out three sides of the rectange but one side has to stay
untouched. The feather selection tool is not appropriate here, since it
feathers of course the whole selection on all 4 sides.

But how else can I do this? Any idea?

Thanks a lot
Rainer

If I had more time I would do a tutorial but I don't right now. However,
you probably want to do something like this. You'll need to have two
layers. Layer #1 is your original layer where you make your selection.
Copy this selection to the second layer. On the second layer feather the
selection. Now let us assume you want the left edge to remain unfeathered
in the final image. You need to apply a mask layer to fade (make
transparent) the left side of this layer. Now do the same thing but on the
right side of the original (bottom) layer selection. Merge the result. Now
you have feathered the top, right and bottom edges but the left edge is
still sharp.

This is just a brief description of one way to accomplish what you asked
for. There are many ways to do this but this is how I would do it. Of
course you'll need to fiddle with the transparency to get it just right but
this should work.

P.S. I'm sure other folks here can give more details than I have but I have
to go now... Gotta get some new tires on the automobile as they're getting
as slick as a U.S. presidential candidate......

P.S. #2 Note that you'll want your fade to be quite fast on the side that
is to remain unfeathered otherwise you get

Oops. Pressed the send button before I finished typing.

There are probably better methods than this but I haven't done a lot of
selective feathering.

Disregard my other post as this is a simpler method. (I'll put off my errand
a few more minutes ;-) )

1. Make selection
2. -> New layer (transparent)
3. Paste into (do not anchor layer yet !!)
4. ->Select -> Feather
5. -> Layer -> Transparency -> Fade (Fade to clear on the side you want to
remain unfeathered)
6. Anchor layer
7. Merge layers.

This works pretty well ! My other response is too complicated though it
gives more precise control. I'd just use this method as it is quick and
easy. And I tested it first so I know it works ;-)

Well.......maybe not. Seems there is a flaw in this method so I'll work on
it when I get back later today. The problem with this method is thelower
layer copies over the feathered edges when merged. Several methods come to
mind including cutting everything out of the bottom layer selection except
for the left edge. Then merge. Now the hard edges WILL be gone. Play
around with this concept. Perhaps you'll figure it out before I return.
Good luck,

This technique will approximate feathering on 3 sides of the
rectangle. It is not suitable for complex selections.

Make the rectangular selection. Switch to Quick Mask. In
the mask, select the three sides you want feathered (plus some on
each side) using Select Rectangle (add to selection). Gaussian
blur the selection. Leave Quick Mask.

Select/Toggle Quick Mask.
Use the blur tool to feather the edges.
Select/Toggle Quick Mask.
