It may have been in one of the new or testing versions
I've seen this feature, but Im sure Ive seen, in Gimp, an
adjustable selection area which could be rotated, on
screen, over the original picture, before finalizing the
selection... in other words, you could rotate the selection
rectangle first, then cut or select that "tilted" area.

I have, while searching for this, found a way to rotate
selections as Ive described, via buttons in the pop-up
dialog for the rotate function_ but Im quite sure what I saw
was just "grab selection rectangle / and turn it".

Has anybody else seen this, or know what version it
might be in ?

thanks

Just try making a selection, then take the Rotate Tool and "rotate".
The selection will be rotated

Works in both the current version and in the git version, though the
dialog is slightly different there.

Just to expand on above, it is in the rotate tools settings, the default
is for the whole image but there is a setting for a selection.

A screenshot for reference.

More precisely, the default is to rotate the *selected*
*area* in the *current* *layer*.

But when the "Tool Option" window is active [see Note 1]
for the Rotate tool there are icon options labeled
"Transform:", which chose between "Layer", "Selection",
and "Path".

The default "layer" option rotates the selected *image*
*area* of the current layer. The "Selection" option
rotates the selection mask, not the image area selected.
The "Path" rotates the path, not the image.

Note 1: From the menu item "Windows->Toolbox" enable the
Toolbox window and then double click on any tool to
activate the "Tool Options" window, then enable the
"Tools->Transform Tools->Rotate" menu item.

Note 2: I'm describing this from the development version
(2.7), and there might be slight differences in menus
etc from 2.6.

I was looking for a way to rotate a selection in gimp when I found this.

Unlike the first answer above...

...for me, the solution was to select a rectangle, then hit the rotate button in the toolbox, then below change from "layer" to "selection".

There is a third option "line". I have no use yet for the "layer" or "line", as I don't deal with layers or lines, however, "layer" is selected by default.

See also http://www.imageno.com/l8304zp0xax7pic.html for location of the option buttons I am talking about. They are to the right in the image, circled with red.
