I have started using 2.8.4 and am exporting a .bmp file with 32 bit color A8 R8 G8 B8.
I have tried both "Compatibility Option / Do Not Write Color space information" options, Neither works.

Under Visual Studio the error is 'Cannot load file. Unknown bitmap format'.
I think this worked previously but I have to try it.

The bitmap I am trying to create is 3x3 with A channel.
Todd.

Confirmed that 2.4.7 works, for creating the .bmp.
Confirmed that 2.8.4 .bmp cannot be read by 2.4.7 gimp. 2.8.4 creating invalid .bmp files.

Usually Visual Studio loves 24 bit bmp bitmaps.

Gimp 2.8.4 does create invalid .bmp that previous gimp cannot read.

Is that 3 pixels by 3 pixels or 3 apples x 3 oranges or what?

For windows easy enough to get old versions, hunt through
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/GIMP%20%2B%20GTK%2B%20
(stable%20release)/

thats above tinyurled http://tinyurl.com/akdqy5w

linux, could be a problem, you would have to compile probably against
some old packages.

FWIW a quick test.

A Win7 VM with Gimp 2.8.4
Made an image with an alpha channel. Exported as bmp to both A8R8G8B8
with compatibility and without.

A linux Gimp 2.8.2 - both open ok

A WinXP SP2 VM & Gimp 2.6.11, - no compatibility opened but "with
compatibility" lost the alpha channel.

File viewers, Things like XnViewMP would not show the alpha in the image
but would show it separately if required. A linux viewer evince showed
compatibility but crashed with no compatibility. FireFox browser gave a
very strange result for both.

Just out of interest, why Gimp version 2.4.x ?

Sorry, I was referring to Visual Studio 2008, unable to manage 32 bit
bitmaps.
And yes, there is some issue with alpha channels in bmp (I've always
used png in VS).
