Old Photoshop hand here, working on adapting my skills to the new
toolbox :). Having a problem with something very basic though, nudging a
selection. At first it didn't do anything... check the docs, then I
looked, oh, numlock on, switch it off. Ok cool, there, I can nudge left
to right, but not up and down? Anybody have any clues for poor
bewildered me? (hoping this is some well known "duh" type thing heh)

Having fun so far, and waiting for docking toolboxes in 1.4! :)

Nudging is the ability to move the selection (whether there are pixels
there or not, just the selection) 1 or more pixels in a given direction.
Supposedly, the Alt + (arrow) allows a 1 pixel move, the Alt + Shift +
(arrow) allows a 25 pixel move. You can do the same with layers using
Ctrl + (arrow) to move the layer 1 pixel, while Shift +(arrow) moves 25
pixels....

at least, that's how it's supposed to work. I can only get it to go left
- right, not up - down.

It's buggin me. This is, kinda a basic requirement, at least for how I work.

Yes, but compared to nudging with the arrow keys, that is extremely
cumbersome :(.

You can nudge a pasted selection, i.e. the pixels, not the outline,
using the cursor keys, in all directions. Using shift, you can move it
a number of pixels at a time (10? 25?)

This requires the move tool to be selected and the image window to be
active.

You can also move the selection outline, the way Leonard described,
but indeed not using the cursor keys.

This will be fixed in GIMP 1.3.4 (this 'bug' was only recently
discovered, see <http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78731>, and
indeed Sven Neumann almost did not consider it a bug but an
enhancement request, so you're in luck there.)

If you feel adventurous, you could download current stable GIMP from
CVS and compile it yourself.

Actually, the bug description does not make it clear to me if the bug
has been fixed, or if only support for putting in nudging has been
implemented.

Hmm, I'm not reading the same thing there. What I see them saying is
that when using one of the selection tools (rectangular, eliptical,
etc), and trying to nudge with the cursor keys it doesn't work, where
while using the cursor keys while the move tool is activated, it does
work, thus an inconsistancy in the interface. In fact, for me, yes the
move tool is selected, the image window is active, and numlock is off
(as specified in the help file), I can nudge the floating selection left
to right, but not up or down.

I don't want to nudge any pixels, just the outline :).

I will get the latest stable to check, because I'm a brave person :D.
(that and I can always reinstall the old one if it's seriously flakey)

Thanks for the info! :D

I can nudge the pixels in any direction, the outline in none.

When there's no floating selection, only an outline, cursor keys and
Shift + cursor keys move the layer, not the selection outline.

Which means that it's broken, as according to both the context sensitive
help for the move tool, and the "GIMP: The Official Handbook" say you
can move any available *selection* in the way I described in a previous
msg. Bummer. Here's to hoping it's fixed soon! Getting the cvs tree now.

It depends on both the user and the situation. I find it generally
easier to use mouse controls to move things, but it is true that if I
want to move the selection only a few pixels, it does require raising the
magnification high enough to see what I'm doing. Then it is pretty
easy.

I think one problem is that some key sequences have been appropriated by
the gnome desktop, so they don't work as specified by the Gimp. For
example, Alt-left mouse is supposed to work for moving a selection,
but instead it moves the whole window. But as I noted Ctrl-Alt-left
mouse does it instead.

You're not gonna believe this, you mentioned Gnome taking over key
sequences (which is a thought that crossed my mind, but was quickly
shooed away by the thought that "This think is built on the Gimp Tool
Kit, surely they wouldn't cripple their biggest program by doing that."
and left it at that. So, what do I do now that it crossed my mind again?
Well, fired up blackbox. Fired up Gimp. Nudgey nudgey in all directions!
I'll be darned if that's not exactly what they did!

My situation, with nudging is, I do some interface designs and 3dish
things in Photoshop, and in order to do that you must be able to easily
nudge selections around just the tiniest bit to do miniscule highlights
and such. Now that it works, I can find my next stumbling point in my
Gimp Mind Conversion :).

Thanks so much!!

:D
