Can someone please explain this sentence from the programming doc's

the first two that have me totally confused. I'm assuming English as a
second language here, and I don't want to pick on the author or his/her
volunteered time, in fact I'm grateful for it; I just can't decode it.
They are in the last sentence of:

There are many joyous functions for the handling of selections and
layers and whatnot, which you may find by reading gimp.h or using the
db_browser. One that I should warn you about is adding new layers to
images: A layer created with gimp_layer_new must still be added to the
image with gimp_image_add_layer before it will do any good. Be sure you
pass the same image ID to both functions. And don't create layers
without an alpha channel that aren't background layers if you're not
looking for trouble.

That sentence twists my mind in every direction and makes no sense to
me. I'm hoping it does to someone else.

I think what he (or she) is trying to say is that layers other than
background layers must have an alpha channel otherwise you'll get in a
horrible mess.

That sort of makes sense to me. Again, I'm apologetic to the original
author as I think we need more documentation on projects and other than
that line, it all made good sense to me.

I understand the sentence without any problem... I think that the author
is an Italian. If you translate it literally to Italian, all that
negations make sense :-)

In any case, if the documentation needs a rewrite in English, then
shouldn't we, as the de facto support group, take up the reigns
ourselves?

I think that's a really good idea. It would be unrealistic to think
that everyone would be fluent in every language and the original author
should be applauded for trying to provide good documentation in English.
I'm not sure who is the right person to do this, but I'm very new to
gimp scripting and would probably generate something even less cogent,
or less accurate, than the original author.

That would be nice. Currently, there is no dedicated maintainer for
the english version of the user manual - the authors of the other
languages try to keep it up to date, though.
http://docs.gimp.org/help.html describes how to get involved in the
project. I do suggest that you read the archives of tha mailing list,
to get an idea of the current topics.
