I have a file /Applications/Gimp.app - according to Finder, although in
a terminal it seems to be a directory - what gives here?

Where do i put .scm files?

That's because it's an OSX 'Package', which is basically a folder made
into an executable application. All the files needed are contained
therein. You can see what's in there with Control-Click and 'Show
Package Contents'.

No idea, sorry - probably in the package somewhere.

All applications in the Finder refer in actuallity to a directory. The
application itself, including the application's default settings, are
hidden deep in that .app directory.

However, the user directories for the GIMP are probably stored
elsewhere (a wild guess would be in ~/.gimp-2.x). You can see where
exactly the GIMP stores user files as follows:

1. Start the GIMP.

2. Go to <File>/Preferences....

3. In the Preferences dialog window, go to the section called Folders.

(See <http://docs.gimp.org/en/ch08s21.html>.)

Ah, now I see.... Been using Gimp on Linux up until now and this
business of running executables from inside packages which look like
executables is new to me.
